Prologue

I was dreaming about the girl with the red hair again.

She sat in the middle of the cell with her back turned on me, as always. From what I could make out behind, she was wearing jeans that are three days worth of use and a high-top sneaker, the other pair missing.

She was crying. Her soft sobs echoed on the cold cobblestones of the dungeon.

"I didn't do anything wrong." The girl muttered to herself as if she was muttering a solemn prayer. "I am innocent"

Suddenly the gate of the prison cell opened and a boy about the age of seventeen entered.

The boy was made of gold –literally. He has a golden tan; his hair, which is gold, was styled in the manner of a Greek statue. Although his facial features are outstanding, with high cheekbones and a pointed nose, what stood out the most in his face were his eyes. They were amber and they glowed with a predatory glint. He was a lion and the girl with the red hair was his prey.

He stalked towards the girl but stopped a foot away. The boy glared at the girl.

"Why Clary?" he asked. "Why would you do such a thing?"

The girl, Clary, stood rather clumsily on her feet.

"I didn't do it" She replied hoarsely "You know me Jace. You know that I wouldn't do anything like that"

Jace started pacing, his breathing becoming heavy and laboured. He ran his hand through his golden mane and stopped in front of Clary.

"I thought I knew you Clary!" Jace yelled. "I thought you were different from your father and brother!"

"But I am!" Clary exclaimed. "I am different from them!"

Jace glared at Clary before grabbing her by the neck and raised her a few feet off the ground. His grip was strong enough to inflict pain but not strong enough to cut the wind out of her windpipes.

"Jace!" Clary gasped and grabbed Jace's arm in a lame attempt to remove herself from his hold.

"No" Jace said menacingly "You were just as manipulative as your father and brother. You pretended that you are a young innocent little girl. You pretended that you are someone that can be trusted. But you're not, are you Clary?"

He tightened his grip making Clary choke.

"But you know what Clary?" Jace said "I want to thank you for proving to me that loving a person will destroy you. So thanks a lot"

Jace released his hold on Clary and took a step back.

"Stay away from me and my family." He said as he turned towards the door "You really are a Morgernstern."

With that said, Jace left the cell leaving a gasping Clary behind.

"Jace, please listen to me!" Clary called breathlessly "Please, not you too."

I woke up with a start and a bruise on my neck. A bruise in the shape of someone's fingers, as if someone tried to choke me while I was asleep.
