RARER STILL

I'm captain of a starship bearing shining silver wings
I've roamed across the universe and seen a lot of things
Incredible to look at, too unreal to comprehend
A captain's life in Starfleet means adventure without end.

I've seen a mother made of granite sitting on her nest,
And fought a feline woman who possessed an extra breast
Been shoulder-deep in tribbles and I've swam to rescue whales
And I know I'll entertain you with my stories and my tales

I've dealt with cranky deities who try to lure my crew
And saved a world called Ekos from a violent Nazi coup
I've had a godlike teenager decide to hold my trial--
But even more unusual--to see a Vulcan smile.

I've been to "there" and back without quite knowing where "there" is,
And drank beverages like Tranya--even aliens like fizz!--
I've met cerebral citizens encased in glowing spheres
And I've used the sun for gravity and journeyed 'cross the years

I've seen a green-skinned dancing girl parade each shapely curve
Been face to face with Romulans and never lost my nerve
The Warbird fight was thrilling, and Orion steps beguile,
But much more notable to me--to see a Vulcan smile.

I've met a probe called V'Ger and I helped it find its path
Matched minds against a superman and earned his hateful wrath
I've grappled with a Klingon in the very jaws of hell
And crawled back up the fiery mountain even as he fell

I've seen sunrise on a thousand worlds in hues pastel and bright
And watched the patterns of the stars adjust from night to night
I've flown across the universe from mile to distant mile
But nothing in that universe is like a Vulcan's smile

Adventures come and missions go, and always they enthrall
I've learned so much from trip to trip and yes, I treasure all,
But still those memories stand out that make it all worthwhile
That fleeting, rarest vision--to see a half-Vulcan smile.
