A/N: Thank Heaven for little brothers.

Above the Noise and Confusion

After waking beside an empty desert highway, he'd been grateful to find shelter from the merciless, baking sun.

He'd prayed for a passing car, but had second thoughts when the gold, low-riding Lincoln Continental appeared. The car screeched to a halt and a trenchcoat-wearing stranger jumped out at him.

"Gabriel?" The stranger cried, staring deep into his eyes as if searching for something.

"You know me?" he asked, confused by the stranger's intense manner.

The stranger laughed on finally noticing their shade was an immense willow in an otherwise lifeless wasteland. "You did, and I'm pretty sure you will again."

"You'll just have to adjust," Castiel interrupted, cutting off Gabriel's complaints.

Gabriel stared. "Boy, you've changed."

"Thank you."

"I'm not sure it was a compliment," quipped Gabriel.

"If I've learned anything, it's 'our Father moves in mysterious ways ' is an understatement. He's even more capricious than you."

"Tell me about it," whined Gabriel. "Coming back as human I can accept, but this and at Easter. I guess it's payback for all the pranks, but it's still cruel.

Castiel cocked his head.

Gabriel gestured at the insulin tablets that had miraculously appeared in his pocket. "Apparently, I now have diabetes."
