Today was the day. The big one. No going back now. It was all or nothing, and he was nervous as fuck. He was going to do it. John was going to propose to his girlfriend.
Although John and Rose has been going steady for quite a number of years, he still doubted himself. Would she say yes? Would she flat out reject him? What if she broke up with him today? The thoughts were making his head ache, and he simply decided to stop thinking about all the bad things that could happen.
"John? Yoo hoo? Anyone in there?" John looked at Rose and smiled. They were both sitting on the couch in John's living room, and watching some TV show.
"Captain John to Lieutenant Rose. I'm still here, over. I was just thinking."
"Lieutenant Rose to Captain John. Oh really? What about? Over."
John looked down at his lap. He wanted to ask so so bad. Why hadn't he planned this out? Oh god, what an idiot.
"Rose… I need to ask you something really important."
Rose sat up straighter. "What is it, John? Is something wrong?"
"No, nothing's wrong. It's just…" He leaned over and kissed her softly. He looked at Rose, and tried as best as he could to make eye contact. He reached into his pocket, still keeping his eyes on Rose, and began to speak. "Rose, I, um. Shit. Rose, will you-"
A shrill scream suddenly filled the living room. Rose and John looked up, at each other, and then ran to the kitchen. A few seconds later, John yelled also.
John's dad was on the floor. Well, his knee was, anyway. He was kneeling in front of Rose's mom, holding out a ring in a velvety box.
John leaned against the counter for support as Ms. Lalonde screamed 'yeses' and kissed Mr. Egbert. He looked at Rose, and Rose looked at him. John reached into his pocket and took out a box, much like the one John's dad had, and waved it at Rose. Her eyes went wide, and she opened her mouth as if she was going to say something, but closed it. John shook his head, let out a nervous laugh, and mouthed the words, "Oops."
