A/N: For anyone who hasn't read the summary, Sam killed Gollum.
Disclaimer: Wait, it's not mine? Darn it! For a moment there I thought...
"The Ring is mine."
Oh, yes. Oh... Oh, yes.
And oh, the triumph and the joy and the power, they sweep through me like a burning flame, flaming higher and higher and filling me with ecstasy, a high keening wail of elation fills my ears and my thoughts and the air around me, so that everything is gone and all there is in the world is the Ring and me, together, forever, because the Ring is mine and I am Hers, we are one and we will be one for eternity, always... And even as I think this She is filled with thoughts of her beloved, her master Sauron, and the thought that they will soon be reunited fills Her with such joy that almost I am rejoicing myself, though it is not what I want, it is not... She can hear the cries of the Nazgûl already, come to retrieve Her, and She is so happy, celebrating Her own personal victory and Her long-awaited reunion, because everything is falling into place, and She is so wrapped up in this that it is easy for me to take a single step back.
The falling is nice. Almost like flying in my dreams. Who would have thought?
She almost misses it. Almost doesn't notice how the whistle of the air is replacing the high thin note of victory, how the world is no longer me and Her but instead me and the beautiful tossing ocean of flames. I think She realizes it about halfway down.
The world is full of fury.
Suddenly everything is red, red as blood. A great, burning heat falls upon me, swiftly replaced by a deathly cold. She is gone, gone from my heart and mind as swiftly as She came, no longer even tempting me, and the loneliness is heart-rending, I had the most precious thing in all the world for a few short seconds and now She has left, I am alone as the red flames swiftly approach me...
A beautiful cacophony of heat surrounds me, and I am burning.
The last thing I hear before the blackness takes me is Her voice whispering, "I'm sorry, my love, I couldn't make it..."
A/N: In one of his letters, J. R. R. Tolkien mentioned that if Sam had not spared Gollum, Frodo would most likely have thrown himself into the Fire.
