Daniel Jackson rushed to his daughter's room. She was having a nightmare. Daniel wasn't sleeping anyway, and was, in a way, glad for the distraction. He reached the room, turned the light on, and jumped to Becky's bed.
"Whoa, whoa, hey. I'm right here. You're okay."
Becky woke up and fell into the arms of her father. She was crying. She stayed there for a few seconds. Her father's voice was comforting to her and she soon calmed down. Daniel set Becky back down. He stroked her hair as she calmed down and her breathing returned to normal.
"It was just a dream, baby. You're okay. You wanna talk about it?"
"No." She said quietly.
"That's okay. You don't have to. But you know you can talk to me anytime you want, right?"
"I know."
"Okay."
"Daddy?"
"Yes?"
"Do you miss mommy?"
More than you'll ever know. "Yes. All the time."
"Do you still love her?"
Daniel smiled sadly. "Yes. I love her very much."
Daniel could have stayed where he was forever. Right there with his beautiful, brown-haired, brown-eyed, little girl, stroking her hair, helping her sleep. Daniel suddenly thought about how his wife looked when she slept. Becky looked almost exactly the same way. Like an angel. Daniel's angel.
"Can you stay here until I go to sleep, daddy?"
Daniel smiled. "Of course I can." Daniel looke dover to the wall. "I've got a better idea."
Becky looked in the direction her father's eyes were going, and she silently agreed. Daniel was looking at the rocking chair that Becky's grandfather, Charles, had made just for her, months before she was born. Daniel took Becky's hand and led her over. He sat down first and Becky crawled into his lap.
"Better?"
"Yeah." Becky then asked, "Daddy, will you go away like mommy did?"
Daniel was taken aback. What brought her to ask something like that? Daniel turned her back around so she could look him in the eye and know he wasn't lying to her.
"No, baby. I would never, ever, ever leave you. For any reason."
"But mommy said that to me, too!"
Daniel frowned. He brushed a stray piece of hair from her face. It broke Daniel's heart that she was actually having to ask this, but as Daniel thought about it, he was surprised she hadn't actually asked him sooner. He tried to explain.
"Honey, sometimes accidents happen. What happened to your mother was an accident. There was no way to know it would happen. It wasn't her fault, my fault, it wasn't anyone's fault."
Becky was silent for a moment as she took in what her father had just told her. She decided he was right and she settled back down. Daniel asked,
"Honey, you want me to tell you a story?"
Becky just nodded and Daniel got into a long story about a princess and a cat. He had more fun than he thought he would, and it even got his mind off the past few weeks, if only for thirty minutes. When Daniel finished, he asked,
"What'd you think?"
No reply.
"Becky?"
Daniel looked down and saw Becky was asleep. He smiled. He couldn't tell how long she had been asleep, but he was glad she finally was. Daniel picked her up and brought her over to her bed. When she had been tucked in, Daniel sat beside her bed and looked at a picture she had on her nightstand. It was a picture taken last summer of Daniel, Emily, and Becky when they had gone on vacation with Jack.
Daniel got up and replaced the picture. He kissed Becky on top of her head. He went to the door and before he turned off the light, he looked back at Becky and said,
"I love you, my angel. Sweet dreams."
Standing outside her door, Daniel took a deep breath. He knew they'd be okay. It wasn't going to be easy for either of them, but at least they had each other. That was enough for him.
A/N: What'd you think? It's my first story in a while, and while it's definitely not perfect, I think it's the best one I've ever done. I beg you: please review! :)
