Loki chased after his brother from the grand castle, the pinnacle of Asgard. Twelve-year-old Thor was much faster than eleven-year-old Loki would ever be. They came to the grand courtyard and picked up their wooden swords.
"Alright," said Thor with the articulation of a leader, "You can be the Frost Giant and I'll try to kill you!"
"Aw, c'mon!" whined Loki. "I always have to be the Frost Giant!"
"That's just because you're so good at it!" encouraged his elder brother, standing with his sword at the ready.
Loki sighed, rolled his eyes and took his ready stance. Thor slashed at his sword back and forth again and again. They were going through the motions. Thor would always beat Loki. Loki would always be second best to his brother.
Thor was brave. Loki wasn't. Loki had a knack for twisting the truth, though he never used it on his parents…that often…
"AHA!" Thor had Loki pinned to the ground, the wooden blade of the sword against his neck. "Got you, Frost Giant! Now all of your realm must bow to the power and might of Asgard!"
"I don't want to play anymore," said Loki, getting up from under his brother's grip and crept off.
Walking along a winding path away from the castle Loki remembered something his father had said to him not that long ago.
"Only one of you will ascend to the throne; but both of you were born to be kings."
Loki knew that this was true, if his brother wasn't Thor, future warrior of Asgard. He was just Loki…second best.
