The dragon in the sky burns bright, blotting out the stars, and Fili knows, that even if they die here, he was right to stay with his brother.
II.
Fili doesn't say anything about Tauriel, and Kili hopes that he isn't angry- he keeps meaning to ask him, beg to hear what he thinks, but they've reached the mountain and it is never the right time again.
III.
The gold is so much colder than Fili imagined, and Thorin seems colder still.
IV.
"Do you think he'll come around?" Kili whispers, but Fili says nothing, just drags his teeth over the ragged edge of his lip, and Kili thinks it's the first time he hasn't had an answer.
V.
"Will you follow me, one last time?" Thorin asks, and Fili doesn't speak- just nods, because he can barely see, anything else but the peace in his uncle's eyes and the smile on his brother's face.
VI.
Kili had thought that he'd fought before, but he understands now what a real battle is- and Mahal, it's exhilarating and dizzying and absolutely terrifying.
VII.
If they make it out of this alive, Fili thinks, as they part ways in the tunnels, he's going to tell his brother just how frightened he was.
VIII.
He had thought it would hurt to die, but this, Kili knows, is worse- his brother, on the ground, unmoving, with eyes that are bluer than the sky they no longer see.
XI.
The Eternal Halls seem so desolate, so empty until Fili hears his brother's voice- and it hurts more than anything, knowing, but that doesn't stop him from running towards the sound as fast as he can.
X.
"I thought I'd lost you," Kili breathes, clasping his brother's hands in his, and there's something missing, still (this isn't life)- but they're together, and that is all they really need.
