"And one last thing," Meredith spun around after attempting to turn away from Jo. "Alex is my family. I know I have Maggie and Amelia and Webber and all of Derrick's family, but Alex is number one. He has been her the longest and even though he wasn't always my favorite, he's the only one who stuck around. George died, Izzie left us, Christina moved out of the country, Derek and Lexie and Mark are all gone. So it's just me and Alex. So, if you and him work out, and I hope you do. You can't take him away, you got it? I'm sorry if that's selfish but he helped me get my baby girl and when I was attacked and stuck in the hospital, he was the one I trusted to truly look after them. I love Callie to pieces, but Alex is in charge of them. He's who I trust. So when everything works out, and you are part of our family, then I expect you at Christmas and thanksgiving and their birthdays. Because you are important to Alex and therefore you are important to us. I am sorry for hurting you by thinking you weren't welcome. I was hard on you but Alex has been through a lot and you have to be tough. When you were younger you proved you could make it on your own, now you have to work on surviving with those you love. Trust me when I say it's hard."

With that Meredith did turn around and leave the room. She meant what she said. There was a time when she would have never considered Alex family but now he was her only connection to a lot of her old family. He had been through it all with her. So she owed it to Alex to help him find the girl who could endure as much heartbreak as they had and still come out of it hopeful.

Jo stood there stunned for a few minutes, digesting everything that Meredith had just said. It kind of made sense. She knew about everything of course. Alex had a really rough childhood and he came to this hospital only to face more heartache. There was Izzie and Rebecca, the intern and her baby Tommy, he had been shot and was supposed to be on the plane that crashed. He had cut off Dr. Robbin's leg and the number of friends he lost that worked here was enough to make anyone go insane. Meredith was right to worry about him, and the fact that they were the only two left definitely explained why Alex drops everything to help her. Plus Jo already knew he loved the kids, he practically moved back into Meredith's house while she was in the hospital. Determined, Jo decided that she was going to take the opportunity Meredith just offered her. She was going to be a part of this family.

This is super freaking short but I just felt like Meredith needed to add this to her speech with Jo and I didn't want to watch the new episode until I had made my peace with this idea running in my head.

Ok, so a review from C. Rinkuki Takato saying I needed to add Jo's reaction inspired me to do just that. So everything about this is the exact same except like two paragraphs have been added to the end.
