The whole team is busy. It seems like everything and everyone are in constant motion. Spencer is on the phone. Stella is writing on the board. Eve runs in with a few sheets of paper in her hands and a look on her face like she's about to burst with excitement. Stella has finished writing on the glass and is rapidly discussing something with Grace, eagerness clear in her voice. Her French accent is more pronounced when she's excited. A phone rings. It doesn't interrupt the flurry of things, though; it's answered efficiently by Stella while Eve explains her findings to the rest of us. Very clever! We need to check that out. I nod and Grace nudges me. I thank Eve and she hurries back to her lab. Spencer rings off and he and Stella head out into London City; a place no less busy than our workplace at the moment. Everything today seems to go well and I can't help but pessimistically wonder for a moment if it's all going to suddenly turn on us. But my team is a good one. The best.
Just before he exits the office, Spencer cracks a joke at Grace and her eyes light up as she laughs.
For a moment everything seems back to the way it was. Spencer's amusement is obvious in his voice and Grace's eyes glitter with joy. I notice the look in her eyes and for a moment, all I can see are a different pair of eyes. Beautiful, blue eyes as well, but surrounded by a youthful face, a cheeky grin. There's a glitter of something more than amusement in her eyes as she laughs and pushes her blonde hair out of her sight. I miss that look in her eyes.
Stella is a good policewoman (usually), and she belongs on the team now… but no one can ever replace those laughter-filled blue eyes and I don't want anyone to try.
Grace calls out to me and I pull myself out of my memories and follow her into her office with a smile on my face.
