You were in college working part time waiting tables
Left a small town, never looked back
I was a flight risk with a fear of fallin'
Wondering why we bother with love if it never lasts
Fleur sat down at the small table. She looked around the rustic restaurant, taking note of the wooden tables and chairs. Her eyes moved over the staff, and she noticed they all had something in common: red hair and freckles.
'It must be a family restaurant,' she thought.
There was one redhead that had a fang earring in his ears. His light blue eyes appraised her as he smirked and raised an eyebrow invitingly.
Fleur forced a smile and averted her gaze away from the man. She was no stranger to the come-hither look, but she definitely wasn't interested in some fling. She was here for one reason—to get ahead in life.
She turned her attention back to her notebook and tapped her pen against the paper. Her agent told her that if she wanted a publisher to take her seriously, Fleur needed to have a good number of chapters written before showing her work. Hence, here she sat. Trying desperately to make words.
"May I get you something?" a rough voice questioned.
Expecting to see earring boy, she looked up with a frown, but her pen dropped and her breath caught at the sight of another man. Still with red hair and freckles, but this one was shorter and stockier. "Um..."
He raised his eyebrow and smiled. "Do you want a drink?"
Her mind felt completely blank, and she struggled to find words. Any words. "Coffee. With a little cream." she finally managed to say.
The man nodded. "Coming right up."
Fleur watched him go behind the counter and work the machine. Her eyes lingered on his back, at the way the muscles bunched as he moved. She swallowed, feeling sudden heat between her thighs.
When he returned, she forced herself to speak before he left, "My name's Fleur. I'm new in town, hoping to be a writer."
The man didn't seem bothered by her striking up a conversation even though he was probably supposed to be working. "I'm Charlie. I've been here my whole life. It's nice to meet you."
Fleur nodded. "Nice to meet you," she echoed.
As she watched him go to another table, she picked up the mug and took a sip of coffee. Fleur then looked back down at her notebook. Suddenly feeling inspired, she picked up her pen and began writing the next chapter of her book.
She found herself going back to that restaurant almost every day. She soon found that although it was a family restaurant, Charlie only worked part time while he attended college. She soon learned which days she should go if she wanted to see Charlie.
What she was feeling... it was so new. Fleur had never believed in love. She watched her parents' marriage fall apart and had told herself, she would never land herself in that kind of situation.
And now here she was, falling for a man she had just met. It scared her.
Still, when Charlie smiled at her, when he flirted back, Fleur's heart did a bit of a pitter patter in her chest. And she knew she wouldn't be able to stop what was happening between them.
And maybe, that would be okay.
