A/N: I was busy making manips... and trying to write a LotR/Buffy drabble... when this popped up! Hope you like it. I'll have to make a drabble/oneshot explaining how they came to be... anyway. Part of the 'Two hunters, a witch and a beauty-queen'-verse... (Which is still in the making)

He didn't smile when he came to visit her. It scared her to see Dean look all serious and brooding, not the funny and easy-going guy she usually saw.

Trying to lighten the mood she joked, "I seem to always end up in hospitals..."

It was the wrong thing to say, noticed Caroline, because his brooding features turned into a pain-filled grimace.

He didn't even look at her, she noticed, only stood there beside her bed, looking at the tube that was attached to her arm. She flexed her hand, and the movement seemed to have pulled him out of whatever thought had been in, because his eyes searched hers then.

She tried to smile reassuringly, but this brooding side of his was scaring her. She was afraid that he'd finally had had enough of her, and her incompetence whenever a hunt was concerned.

Oh god, he's going to ask me to leave... he'll tell me to stay away...

He exhaled slowly, closed his eyes, and then sank onto the chair next to her bed. His face was now buried in his hands. She could hear his heavy sighs. She imagined him to be angry.

"Jesus, Caroline..." he started, and she was prepared mentally for the worse. But he didn't continue, instead slowly pulled his hands away from his face and turned to look at her. His gaze on her was intense and full of raw emotions.

Impulsively she reached out her arms, and shifted her weight, grimacing when the movement caused her pain. Just when she moved, Dean did too. His arms enclosed her smaller, fragile shoulders and he rested his chin on the top of her head.

Caroline heard him say something, but it took her a moment to make out what it was. What she did hear made her heart speed up and pound painfully hard against her ribs.

"I could have lost you..."
