The Savage Garden: An Alternate Ending to Little Shop of Horrors
Act 1
The stage is an airport terminal. A small, light-skinned woman with long, curly, plant-like green hair stumbles in carrying a suitcase.
Madeleine: Oh! Zute! I hope I am not late for the appointment!
Madeleine looks around frantically, searching for someone. A weak-looking, clumsy boy with glasses almost trips on his feet coming onto the stage. It's Seymour.
Seymour: [He bumps into Madeleine.] E-Excuse me, ma'am! A-Are you M-Madeleine?
Madeleine whirls around and is relieved when she lays eyes on him.
Madeleine: Yes! B-Bonjour! I was wondering when I'd find you, Seymour!
Seymour shuffles and looks down, a bit embarrassed.
Seymour: W-Well I… You see… Umm…
Madeleine: Was it the plant?
Music begins to play the tune of "Grow For Me".
Seymour: Well… I gave it some plant food
And water to sip
I gave it some sunshine
At first, it gave me zip
But then it grew larger,
Demanded some blood
Now I wish it was over
(Brief pause.)
I tried to talk some sense to it
From friendship to love
But it didn't listen, so what did I do for it-
Kill! Damn sweet talk! Damn thorns!
Seymour pauses to catch his breath.
Madeleine: Sounds like you've got a hand full!
Seymour: Aw, call it what ya will. To me, it's nothing more than a cold-blooded murderer and it's made me into one, too. But don't ya tell anybody! Okay?
Madeleine: Well, alright… If, once the plant is gone, you stop committing those evil crimes.
Seymour appears distressed again.
Seymour: Now I
Now, now, now I
Wish it was over…
Seymour begins to cover his face with his hands and Madeleine reaches over to console him as the music subsides.
Madeleine: Well, it's a good thing, then, that you called and sent for me. I just might be able to help you out of this predicament. But first, I have to investigate the root of the problem by myself. Though, I do have a hunch about how to solve it already.
Seymour: Ya… Ya do? How? What is it?
Madeleine: Well…
For a brief moment, Madeleine takes off her hat and puts it back on before anyone else can see. Seymour appears shocked.
Seymour: H-How come ya didn't t-tell me about this?!
Madeleine: Because it's not normal- it's embarrassing, even. I really don't like my condition.
Seymour: Well, I can see why ya have that hunch of yours, now… But… Let me ask ya something…
Madeleine: Sure, Seymour. What is it?
Seymour: H-How did ya get your hair to be so…
Madeleine: So… What?
Seymour: So… So tame?
Madeleine: Oh! That. Well, you'll see soon enough! Just take me to that plant you've been talking about… What was it's name? Oh yes! Audrey II, right?
Madeleine locks arms with Seymour as they walk off stage. The set is switched out for the backdrop of Mushnik's Flower Shop, where Audrey II sits, waiting, in the corner of the store. Audrey is nervously pacing back and forth, wondering when Seymour will be back from the airport.
Audrey: I do hope Seymour is alright…
Audrey II begins to grin and curl some of his vines.
Audrey II: Well, maybe I can keep you company until he gets back, doll. Heheheh…
Audrey: Oh!
Audrey II: Yeah, baby. It talks. You ain't dreamin'.
(STILL WORKING ON THIS!)
