Summary: Her blessing wasn't everything she'd imagined. It was better.

Blessing

Her dream was lovely. It had been peaceful too, such a change from how things had been lately. As she drifted back to consciousness she wished she could recapture it. Then, she became aware of something different. A heavy weight across her middle, pinning her to the downy softness of the bed, and something much firmer than her usual pillow was beneath her head. Her eyelids fluttered open as she sleepily reached out a hand to touch the weight and her fingertips caressed something warm and pliable before she traced down its length to fingers half-spread and lax in sleep. She reversed direction, following his arm up to his shoulder. Rolling onto her side, she blinked twice to bring his slumber-lax features into focus. Oh yes, now she remembered.

Her cheek still pressed against his arm, she reached out and lightly touched his cheekbone. Her hand looked so fair compared to his dark complexion. They were such opposites in looks, in temperament, and recalling their differences, it was almost astonishing to believe that they were now married. Nevertheless, they were. Despite everything, despite the conflicts and the different forces that had combined and conspired to keep them apart, they were married.

She traced his face, memorizing each feature, though after two days of marriage, she should have known it by now. The thought alone brought a blush to her cheeks as her fingertips hovered over his mouth. Then, she started as he suddenly kissed them. Shifting her gaze from his mouth to his eyes, she was swallowed by their dark depths as his lips crooked into a smile beneath her fingers. His rumbling voice was roughened by sleep as he broke the silence, "What are you admiring, my lady?"

She was blushing furiously, she knew, but she could not keep the glib answer from escaping, "Why you, of course, though I am not certain you deserve it when you are awake."

He laughed and his arm around her waist tightened, pulling her closer. He grinned at her even as his other hand tangled in her hair. "Yet it is every man's dream to be so admired by such an enchantress." He kissed her forehead. "Such a goddess." He captured her mouth with his before she could think of a suitable protest. All resistance and embarrassment melted away as she accepted his kiss. She barely remembered to thank Aslan for such a husband before he distracted her completely from any outside thoughts.

To be married was a blessing, indeed. It wasn't what she had imagined, true. Yet she dared to say that it was even better.
