Author's Note: This was a very short story that I entered into a writing challenge on livejournal. The challenge hasn't ended yet so technically I shouldn't be posting this but I have a feeling the challenge will be cancelled due to lack of entries anyway. This was following the theme of "lost/trapped/confused" so I just thought of it randomly off the top of my head. It is quite immature and ridiculous but it makes me smile anyhow. Reviews would be great. Constructive criticism is also welcome. )
"Oh how cruel is humanity toward the heart of nature!" he shouted proudly as he shook an angry fist at absolutely no one.
"Che, shut up," Seth whispered quiet but firm, "I swear sometimes, you want us to get caught. I can't believe you've dragged me into this hippie bullshit again."
"But Seth, we must save the innocent furry ones. Summer is counting on us. Especially since Pancakes has reached his old age."
"I know, I know, but you have got to stop talking or we're going to set off the alarm!"
"Seth stop being loud." Seth turned his head away slowly as he rolled his eyes in frustration.
The two boys crouched, feet tangled in the weeds of the woods nearby the animal testing lab. Seth brainstormed logical ways to secretly break into the glass doors without passing through the red laser lights that formed a tic-tac-toe across the main entrance of the building. Meanwhile, Che being in his usual state of herbal intoxication, looked around, glassy-eyed, remembering his dream of the sea otter—his soulmate.
Che often wondered what would have come of his love for Seth had he not pretended the sea otter was a beautiful, thin brunette—a complete stranger.
Seth turned, small branches scraping his cheeks, and gripped Che's right arm. "When I say 'go', you run around the left side of the building and open the window so I can run around the other side and meet you in the rabbit room faster," Seth whispered in a serious, controlling manner.
"You got it buddy," Che said, barely paying attention to the situation.
"Okay, GO!" Seth yelled taking off into the darkness.
Che, feeling confused and unprepared, stood and began staggering through the tall grass entirely in the wrong direction, toward the glowing red light of the front door. Loud alarms and sirens began sounding, but all Che could hear were Seth's loud, beautiful profanities and his thoughts of how one day, they would set those rabbits free. And he knew that when that day came, their love would be set free as well.
