Nya wasn't sure why she woke up at two in the morning, but she did know that she wasn't going back to sleep anytime soon. She heard faint shouts and ran over to Jay's room to find the Lightning Ninja sleeping restlessly.
"No! Please! I beg you!" he shouted, followed by a scream. How the others could sleep while Jay's dreams were plagued with such discomfort was beyond her. She immediately ran to his side and started running her hand over his cheek.
"It's alright," she whispered in a desperate attempt to wake him, or at least soothe him. A noise in his throat shattered her heart. She knew what the dream was about, and no one should've had to face something like that, especially not alone as Jay had.
"I'm here, Jay. It's alright. You're having a bad dream. Just wake up. You'll be okay. Just open your eyes. No one's here to hurt you." she whispered as the Blue Ninja woke up. "Nya," he whispered. "Don't leave. Please don't leave me. I can't face it alone. Don't leave. Don't leave."
Nya's heart further shattered. "What did they do to you?" she whispered. "It's Scrap-'n-Tap," Jay whispered. "It's too much. I can't do it. I've lost too much already. Don't leave my side, Nya. I can't do it. Not without you."
It broke her heart to see how much he had to suffer while on the Misfortune's Keep. From what she had gathered, Tap-'n-Scrap was the worst he had endured. It was a game of the pirates which involved a lot of rough fighting, and the loser had to keep fighting until he finally beat someone.
Jay never beat anyone in the twisted game.
The Water Ninja gently shushed the Lightning Ninja when he started whimpering again. "I'm here, Jay," she whispered. "I'm here and I have no intention of leaving you. I'll be right by your side until you're in a more fit mental state, but I will never leave you alone like that again." Jay answered with his heartbreaking whimper.
What felt like hours passed before either made any noise other than the occasional whimper and gentle hushing. In reality, it was only thirty minutes before Jay made eye contact with Nya. "It's been two years," he whispered. "Two years since it happened. I should've recovered long ago, but I can't. What's wrong with me?"
"Nothing's wrong with you, Jay," Nya whispered, soothingly. "Some people don't ever heal from something like that. The fact that you're already recovering is surprising." Jay whimpered again.
Silence settled on the pair again. It was another thirty minutes before Jay sat up and swung his legs over the side of his bed. Nya automatically put her arm over the Lightning Ninja's shoulders and pulled him close. Instinctively, she started running her hand through his hair.
"What would I do without you, Nya?" he asked. Nya smiled. "That, I can't help you with," she whispered, joking slightly. Jay chuckled lightly.
Kai grinned when he saw the Lightning and Water Ninjas snuggled up together in Jay's room. He figured he didn't want to know the events of the night before and left them.
He had to admit, though. Jay and Nya looked cute like that.
A/N: I loved writing this one-shot (probably because I love Jaya).
I'd also like to give a quick shout-out to my Discord friend Katherine197. She's a fellow Jaya shipper and is my best friend on Discord. Happy birthday, Kat!
