A/N: A response to KoineKid and my challenge. It's 297 words.
I'm so excited with the response this challenge has generated. We've got a new author publishing, the current writers doing new stuff and a veteran dusting off the keyboard to compose something new. And I'm going to be doing a new series of shorts because my first attempt at one of these needed to be a bit longer and will spawn other similar stories, so stay tuned for that.
"Jennifer Keller?" a tentative voice asked.
Turning Jennifer saw blue eyes, a forced smile and familiar face. Who is she? "Yes?"
"Don't you remember me?" the redhead asked.
"I…" Jennifer's brain become Swiss cheese several months ago and she barely remembered her staff.
"We worked together. Well… sort of," the woman said.
"Katie Brown." Jennifer snapped her fingers.
"Katie Anderson now." Her brows furrowed at Jennifer's reaction.
"Congratulations," she replied.
"I can't believe I ran into you here," Katie said, waving her hand around at the store.
"How far along are you?" Jennifer motioned toward the slight bump under Katie's jacket.
"Four months," she replied. "And you look ready to have the baby now."
"Oh, I'm only six months, but it's twins." Jennifer rubbed her swollen abdomen housing the symbol of her and her husband's love.
"This will be our second," she responded, "Two boys."
"We want to be surprised." Jennifer confided. "When did you move here?"
"I took a teaching position recently at the University. Is your husband based here?"
If Jennifer wasn't driven by hormones she might have realized her next statement could be painful to Doctor Anderson. "Rodney and I work nearby."
"Rodney McKay's your husband?" she almost shouted.
"Yes."
Rodney's almost fiancé averted her eyes as a silence descended between the two women who loved the same man.
"He felt bad about what happened…" Jennifer started. She's still hurting even after four years.
"Good luck to you both," Katie cut her off, looking lost. "Joe and I are really happy. Rodney and I… were never meant to be."
"Shopping again? You need to rest," Rodney scolded as he ushered her into a chair.
"I'd be lost without you," Jennifer said as she kissed him deeply.
"I'd never…"
Jennifer smiled and pulled him close.
A/N: Was thinking of a cat-fight type encounter. Maybe an AU some day.
