James T. Kirk led a very confusing life so far and he was only six. His father had died shortly after he was born. And he was born deaf. His birth mother had given him up, unable to look at him, both because he was the spitting image of his father and his… disability(his biological mother had called it that, not his mom nor he). He was adopted by a woman who ran a manor owned by some far off Ambassador. She was kind and learned ASL, teaching it to him at the proper age. They lived mostly happy, though it could be quite lonely.
Surprisingly for the lonely boy, he had woken one day to a too clean home where his mom was cooking a feast.
She turned to him, frizzy red hair tied up in a ponytail. She took in his appearance and frowned, signing to him, "Go upstairs, shower, change and comb your hair."
Jim frowned and asked why. His mom just shooed him up the stairs.
Jim returned to his mom, meeting all her demands except that his head held a poof of blonde. She laughed – he thought – while she ruffled his hair. The lights flashed and Jim's mom got the door. Jim peeked around the wall as a trio of people entered the manor. A pretty brunette woman, a tall man with a black bowl cut and pointed ears and a boy who was nearly a copy of the man. The boy caught his gaze, human eyes locked into an extraterrestrial face. Jim's shyness and awkwardness caused him to hide behind the wall.
The lady came around the corner, mouth moving and facing his mom. Jim frowned in confusion. The woman noticed him and grinned, lips moving weirdly at him. The six year old shrunk into the wall, brows furrowed and looked to his mom for help.
Luckily, his mom rescued him, signing and mouth moving, "This is my son, Jim. He's Deaf. Jim, this is Lady Amanda, she's married to the Ambassador who owns this manor. They have a son named S-P-O-C-K, Spock, who is only a few years older than you."
To his surprise, this Lady Amanda person started signing, her family walking into the room, "Hello, Jim, nice to meet you."
Politeness was still a concept the boy didn't quite get, but he repeated that it was nice to meet her for his mom's sake. The older boy, Spock, was watching the exchange with curiosity burning in his gaze.
"Why does he," Jim pointed at Spock, looking at Amanda, "have weird ears?"
