Chad Dylan Cooper could do no wrong. Therefore, it made no sense that Chad Dylan Cooper should ever have to apologize for anything. So he never did. He couldn't remember the last time the word "sorry" had escaped his lips when it wasn't in a script. He never felt remorse for his actions.
He wasn't really sure what changed things. Actually, he knew exactly what changed things, but he didn't want to believe it. Sonny Munroe changed things. She was the only person that made him feel the slightest bit guilty when he upset her. It was only with Sonny that he noticed the hurt in her eyes when he said something rude or sarcastic. And it drove him insane.
Chad Dylan Cooper wasn't familiar with emotion. He feigned it very well on Mackenzie Falls, but his personal life had been sadly absent of any real feeling for a very long time. Sonny Munroe changed that as well. For the first time in a long time, Chad Dylan Cooper experienced caring about someone other than himself. It was a very foreign thing to him. He wasn't entirely sure how to handle it.
The only thing he was sure about was that Sonny drove him crazy. Quite often he discovered himself taking a strangled route to the Mackenzie Falls studio in hopes of running into a certain bubbly brunette. And, although he would never admit it to anyone, any comment he made to her was a heartfelt attempt to make her smile. Because he had so little experience caring for others, it was difficult for him and he often said the wrong thing, and it was in those moments that deep down, he knew he wanted to apologize. But Sonny saw him the same way everyone else who knew him did. As a self-absorbed jerk. So he played the part for her, and tried to ignore the fact that he hated days that went by without him seeing her.
On this particular day he was taking another one of his "scenic routes" to Mackenzie Falls when he bumped into the exact person he was hoping to bump into. "Chad," she said with obvious disdain in her voice. "Sonny," he shot back, trying to match her tone. "What are you doing at So Random!?" Sonny asked with the same air of disdain. That was a good question. He hadn't really considered having an excuse for wandering around the studio of his rival show. "I'm taking the long way for, you know, exercise," he answered stupidly. He could tell she didn't believe him, but she let it go. "Well, if you'll excuse me I actually have places to be," she said, before trying to push past him. He stepped in front of her to block her path. She gave him an irritated look and tried to go around him once more. He blocked her again.
"Chad, I have no idea why you feel the need to come over here and be obnoxious, but I don't have time for it," she said matter-of-factly. He feigned hurt. "You don't have time for Chad Dylan Cooper??" he exclaimed. "EVERYONE has time for Chad Dylan Cooper!" "Well Sonny Munroe doesn't, so if you would kindly let me through…" "Ah," he said, "there's your problem. You assume I'll be kind." "UGH! Chad Dylan Cooper, you are impossible!" "Yeah but you know you love that about me," he grinned. "There is NOTHING I love about you Chad," she said with certainty. "Then clearly you don't know me well enough," he said, still very unsure where he wanted their conversation to go. "I know as much as I want to know about Chad Dylan Cooper," Sonny said, finally pushing past him. She stopped suddenly and turned around. "You know," she said, "even if you're taking the 'long way,' you're going in the opposite of the direction you should be." "I knew that," Chad said quickly. Sonny just grinned at him and started off once again. He smiled to himself for a minute before taking off after her.
