"H-huh? What? Hōshō opened her eyes and found herself standing on a flight deck. In front of her were a few Nakajima A4N fighters, Aichi D1A bombers, and Yokosuka B4Y torpedo bombers. "Wh... huh?"
"Look alive, Hōshō," some man told her, running up to her. "Nice to see you wake up, finally. Finally met a person in real life who can sleep standing up." Behind him the planes' crew were firing up the engines.
"Where are we?" Around she looked. There were islands peppered here and there, but fair seas and winds otherwise.
"I dunno, somewhere. That's not important right now."
She looked around and was shocked to see not only the U.S. flag and Soviet naval jack, but also, a flag resembling a German war flag, sans swastikas. "Wh-what? Did I get captured, or something?"
"No, silly, these are our friends. Over there is the enemy."
"Where?"
"Mm, I'm sure they'll come in range eventually. Why not send some fighters out to scout the area?"
"W-well-"
"Wait, that's my job." He chuckled and radioed something in. Soon a few of the A4N fighter planes were taking off, right over his head and hers.
"S-so we're fighting!"
"Yep, of course we are!"
She realized she had her hakama and quiver and bow on her. "Wh-what is going on?!"
"I'll explain later!" The captain stared off into the distance. In his mind's eyes he could see what the fighter planes were seeing. "Ooh, that's one tough looking Dreadnought!"
"Dreadnought? The British battleship?"
"Yep... and there's an Isokaze, too! Two, actually!"
Her heart jumped. "Isokaze? The Japanese destroyer! Two of them? I-I'm fighting my own fellow fleet girls?"
"Is Isokaze one? Never seen her. My destroyers are of the American variety, to be honest. Ah, and there's a Svietlana cruiser. Fricking commie bastards that play this game..."
"Game?"
"You ask a whole ton of questions, Hōshō." He looked up into the air. "That's AA fire, already! Right about now..." He clenched his fists and teeth. "Drop 'em!"
The A4N fighters dropped their rockets onto the Soviet cruiser.
"Six hits! Penetration! Niiiiiice... okay, let's go at her again!"
"What are you talking about?"
"Like I said, a whole ton of questions. I'm trying to get some good hits in on this cruiser! Soften these ships up for my teammates!"
She looked around and realized that most of the ships that were lined up with the carrier moments ago had already sallied off towards the enemy fleet. A cursory glance at their formation made her cover her mouth with her hand. "D-do these people know anything about naval warfare tactics?"
"Nope, or else they'd be in real navies and aboard real ships, and there wouldn't be anything to shoot at until World War III comes around!"
"Three?"
"Mm-hmm! Ah, dammit! There goes one... crap... crap! Come on!"
"What?"
"Lost one. The first three should be back any minute now." He looked up and saw six SBU Corsairs. "Not ours! Get down!" So then he tackled Hōshō to the ground with him.
"Wah!"
Two of the American bombers landed their payload on the flight deck.
"Itai!"
"Yeah, that hurts you, doesn't it! Gotta be more careful... sometimes the automated AA fire doesn't work for crap, you know?"
"AA fire? I don't hear it?"
"Oops. Weird."
Explosions appeared in the air.
He looked up and hummed. "Yep, there it is. And there come a few more!" He covered Hōshō's head with his hand and closed his eyes. "Wait. Why am I doing this? We'll be fine. It's just a game."
"How do you keep saying that?" She watched and winced as the bombs from two more of the Corsairs missed. "This doesn't feel like one!"
"Oh, crap, my fighters are still out there! Umm..." He spotted one of the Isokaze destroyers again and aimed for it. "Yes! Six penetrations, again!"
"Is this how my life is going to end?" Hōshō wondered aloud.
"We'll see. Maybe. Possibly. I have no idea. Okay, let's get some bombers out there!"
D1A bombers flew off.
"...
Crap, I missed.
...
Crap!"
The other Isokaze approached quickly.
"Oops!"
Hōshō's heart sank. Again, probably.
"Return! Okay, fighters out again!"
A4Ns, out in the air.
Shots from the destroyer landed.
"Itai!"
"I've got this sorted out. Or, I will. No problem at all."
The fighters managed hits on the destroyer... and then again.
"Torpedoes!" Hōshō cried.
"Oh, dear!" He tried getting the carrier up to speed.
"Ah!" Soon Hōshō's clothes were a bit torn and charred, as happens with fleet girls often, when they are damaged.
"Hang on, Hōshō. Crap, you're flooding! Crap, crap, crap... let me send a message to team..."
hanafuda1: SOS!
CJay419plus1: poi
"DAMMIT!" He threw a pen down onto the battered flight deck. "He's not even using a Shiratsuyu-class!"
"Captain, here come more-"
Things went black and white.
"Oops! Oh, dear." The captain soon jumped overboard as Hōshō began to list to port.
hanafuda1: hope you enjoy your weed, you POS
"Y-you're leaving me here?"
"Gotta go down with the ship, I'm afraid."
"Aren't you the one who's supposed to do that, Captain? ... if I may so ask?" she questioned, muttering the last part.
"Yeah, but, you know... I'll just go play with Chikuma a bit until you respawn."
"We'll be fine. It's just a game."
"Oh, and I mean the protected cruiser, or whatever. Not the Tone-class Chikuma. Anyways, see you when I see you, Hōshō!" The captain waved and then swam off.
Hōshō stood there, staring real incredulously at the captain as he fled. She looked around her. There was a small fire at the aft end of the ship, smoke billowing in the air. The listing of her ship became steeper with every second. "So... I sink as well..." she sighed to herself. Soon she fell off the angling flight deck into the water.
She gasped as she sat up and looked around. It was dark, but it was familiar. She was in her bed, under the sheets, in her night clothes. Soon she leaned over and covered her forehead with her hands.
... that sure was some dream...
