I wrote this randomly this morning. With the outpouring of SN fic recently, I wanted to jump on the bandwagon. This is in honor of Valentine's Day – a really cute little brotherly love story. I know, I'm absolutely shameless.
I'm dedicating this one to Seth who is the Dean to my Sam. :-)
The Little Things"It's the little things that really count."
Jess had told Sam this practically everyday in the short time that they were together. It was a philosophy Sam tried to live by. Although, it was something he had to remind himself about… a lot. Most of the time he didn't mind, it was just another piece of her that he could hold on to. She had always been that source of the little things; everything good and everything bad. It had all been her.
He never told Dean this, but he was the source of all those little things, now. Sometimes, there was concern written all over his face, or a firm grip on his shoulder for a job well done. No hugs or anything, though. For Dean, that was a big thing. Dean didn't do big things, just the small.
Sam had grown-up expecting nothing at all. When the little things had started becoming known to him, he couldn't imagine that he'd ever lived another way. Sometimes, Sam knew it was the little things that counted; they were what really made your day. And sometimes, the little things were overshadowed by darkness, loss, and pain until a hand reached out from nowhere to guide him back to himself – his brother's hand with his gruff words and occasionally distant demeanor.
But Sam paid attention all of Dean's little things, saw behind the mask, and understood his older brother's point of view. And it was in those times he felt he truly knew what Jess was really saying to him.
It was the little things that counted, and they were right in front of you – in the people that you loved the most.
