Title: "Equipment Check"
Author: Darkover
Rating: K
Disclaimer: I do not own "Band of Brothers." I greatly admire the real men about whom the miniseries was made; no offense is intended, and I very much hope none is taken. This is a work of fiction. I am not making any money off of this, so please do not sue.
Character: Lewis Nixon
Summary: Nixon's POV about why he was the number two man in the training drops.
I'm right behind him—not because he doesn't trust anyone, but because I don't. This is too important to trust that anyone else will do this right. He is too important.
So each jump, I position myself directly behind him, so that I can be the man to perform his equipment check. Sure, we all pack our own parachutes. But when it's drop time, we all depend on a buddy to check our equipment, too. Dick is never concerned about who checks his equipment, but I am. I do.
In every training jump, I'm the number two man, because I don't trust anyone else to keep him safe. If I do nothing else of consequence in this war, I will do that.
