Of Family and Future

Kanmare gazed across the land that her children called home, smiling slightly at the elder's retelling of the beginning of which herself, the Rainbow Serpent, came. The younglings watched the elder weave the story with pure amazement and captivation. She laughed jovially as one fell over when the elder abruptly raised his voice for emphasis. The other hatchlings laughed as well but the elder paused and lifted the teary eyed child in his arms before continuing the story in his new position.

Kanmare watched the family for a minute longer before turning her gaze to the wide ocean that separated her land from others. She watched the Eora hunters teach the male fledglings how to hunt and watched in further amusement as a female youngling beat all the males in the challenge. Kanmare's smile fell off her face as she saw brown blotches appear on the horizon. Her eyes narrowed dangerously before she flew to the group. She froze when she saw her elder brother's children controlling each of the eleven objects that appeared to be giant versions of her children's canoes.

She listened in on the strangers' conversations. Each sentence gave fuel to the fire of rage that grew inside her. With slight satisfaction Kanmare noticed her fiery glare had increased the temperature and the trespassers pulled at their clothes in discomfort. She stopped however as she would have to talk to her brother about the situation, before she did anything she may regret. Like setting the oversized canoes and everything on them on fire.

She swiftly flew to her birthplace of clouds and ignored the door in favour of her brother's 'office' window. The male in question looked up startled at her sudden appearance before morphing into happiness, "Mare! It's been too long! You've finally taken a break from your stalking?"

"My name is Kanmare God not Mare! And it's not stalking it's making sure that they don't cause their demise, unlike you, I actually care what my children are doing," Kanmare snapped, scowl firmly set on her face.

God frowned at his little sister's attitude, "I do care what my children do sister, after all, the world's fate is all written out."

"So you are aware that your children are currently heading to my land to make it a dump for their troublemakers?" Kanmare hissed, taking on attributes of her serpentine form.

Understanding flashed momentarily in her older brother's eyes before he sighed and put his never ending papers down, "I do understand where you are coming from sister."

"I sense a 'but' coming," she snarked

"But," he said firmly, "we must allow the world take its course."

The temperature of the room rose dramatically setting some of the plants that God had placed around the room alight. Some of the ancient trinkets he had on his shelves shattered when the room shook with tremendous force. Kanmare was in her sunrise coloured serpent form, rearing and hissing menacing at her brother. God simply gave her a a bored look before returning the room to its original state, "You wouldn't hurt family sister."

"A mother would go great lengths to protect her children," she snarled, still in her serpent form.

"Sister, would you really chose the hard path that leads us to losing our children or the path that contains hardships but ends in happiness for both sides?" He commented in return. He watched with remorse as Kanmare slumped on the floor, back in her human form, in defeat and grief.

"I would wish the path of only happiness for my children," Kanmare sobbed from her curled form on the floor, as if the future physically pained her.

"As would I sister," God whispered rising from his chair and holding his sister close to his chest in hope to comfort her, "as would I."
