Maes Hughes POV

Location: Central Riverbank

Iwas walking along the riverbank with my hands stuffed in my pockets to keep them out of the freezing cold. It's the middle of winter here in central and the temperature gets below freezing, well unless you're Roy who uses his flame alchemy to heat his things. Anyway, as I said, I was taking a walk down the riverbank heading towards the bridge that was a few miles down the road. I was going the warmth of my home to my beautiful, darling wife Gracia.

'Ah, Gracia. She is like God's gift to me. I love her so much. There is no better angel than her. What would I do without her here with me?' I thought to myself.

I was broken out of my thoughts when I saw something black float by me in the water. When I first looked at it, I thought it was some type of cloth- nothing really important-, but as I watched it float by, I realized it was a jacket that someone probably loss. You know, since I'm in the military, I probably should pull it out of the water and try to see if there was any ID that could tell me who it belonged to. But… I'm off duty, and I just can't stall in seeing my lovely angel. Although…. that did look almost identical to the jacket that Roy was wearing earlier today. Oh well, It's probably not his anyway, just someone else's that has a similar style…

Suddenly I stopped and heard noise behind me. No... scratch that... Those are footsteps, heavy footsteps, but heavier than any civilian to have. I knew exactly who they belonged to.

"CAPTAIN, HOW NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN!" I sighed as my eardrums screamed mercy from the sudden boom of the person's voice.

"Major Armstrong." I said to him, my eye slightly twitching, and my ears still ringing. "It's so nice to see you as… well" I tried to keep my voice as calm as possible, trying to keep some sanity in the conversation.

"HOW ARE YOU THIS FINE EVENING?" he asked, well… more like shouted at me.

"Fine evening?" I asked, digging my pinky into my ear to try and stop the ringing. "Major are you insane? It's freezing out here." I continued after my hair had returned to its place.

He didn't respond and I noticed that his gaze was locked on something near, or on, the water. I turned and followed his gaze. There, floating in the water, were a pair of white gloves with a flame alchemy symbol.

Wait a minute... a jacket that looked exactly like Roy's, and a pair of gloves too? I don't imagine many people carried around gloves with the alchemy flame symbol on the back of them. Something didn't feel quite right. I reached down and scooped up the jacket and gloves, the water dripping down onto the ground.

"I MUST SAY" Said the major. "AREN'T THOSE COLONEL MUSTANG'S BELONGINGS?" I looked between the jacket and the gloves.

"I am not sure of that yet Major, this could be someone else's…" I trailed off as something dropped from the pocket of the soakened jacket. It appeared to be a wallet.

I picked it up, just to identify who the gloves and jacket were owned by. I found the ID right away and felt myself go pale. There staring back at me was the photograph of my best friend, Colonel Roy Mustang.
