Behind that mask of mischief is a scared, little cat who craves attention, desperately trying to overcome melancholy.
–Zen Wistaria about Obi
Obi is doing it again— trying to mask that look of insecurity as he watches his master converse with a new recruit for the post of a knight. He maybe cautious when it comes to hiding his emotions but he doesn't know that his master is a step ahead in this field. The second prince is blessed with a keen vision that helps him look past people's deceptions. To ordinary folk, it may appear as if he is busy talking with the newly appointed knight but Zen Wistaria is very much aware of his messenger's unwavering gaze. He is unable to keep himself from smiling at the ex-assassin. It has only been two weeks since he joined Zen's side so it is obvious that he must feel uncomfortable in this new atmosphere, especially because of the fact that this new job requires him to work more on the front instead of blending into the shadows for stealth. But not only that, Obi is much more worried about himself. He is afraid that he'll be kicked out the minute his master finds someone better than him, which is exactly why he always tries to impress Zen.
When he realizes that he has been caught, Obi decides to conceal his unease behind a mischievous smile as he approaches his master.
"Can I be of any assistance, Master?" he asks smoothly.
"Why don't you go check up on Shirayuki for me?" Zen offers.
But just as the prince had expected, Obi declines by throwing in a naughty remark, "It's still early. She must be asleep in her nightdress. Do you want me to sneak up on her when she's so vulnerable?" He winks for further effect and yet Zen buys none of it. The new recruit on the other hand, blushes at Obi's words and Zen has to dismiss him then.
As the knight leaves, the second prince shakes his head in hopes of desisting his lips from curving up into a smile but unfortunately he fails. Oh how he enjoys this new guy's company! Obi may have worked as an assassin for years but his subtlety just won't work on Zen. And now that the prince thinks about it, Obi is exactly like a cute, little, scared kitten. No. More like a scared yet smart kitten who is always wary of his surroundings, constantly searching for a home— a place to belong..a place he can call his own.
He knows that he can never replace Mitsuhide or Kiki but he wants to have his own post next to Zen, even if it's slightly below the two trustworthy aides. Just like an innocent kitty, he craves his master's undivided attention. Well, considering the circumstances and situations Obi has gone through, Zen knows that it won't be easy for the young messenger to relax and settle down. It'll take him a while to realize that positions have got nothing to do with this. It's more about their bonding. Obi may not understand now but he has already earned an irreplaceable spot in Zen's heart. It'll take a lot of time for the topaz-eyed man to grasp and accept this fact. But the second prince doesn't mind. He has all the time in the world.
"Well then Obi, help me with my paperwork." Zen orders softly.
The man eager to be of help, bows to the prince with natural grace and responds, "As you wish, Master."
A/N: So how was it? Drop in some constructive feedbacks please..:3
