The beauty of night

I very much like this "Top of the hill with the lone tree up top" spot that I made for them in my story "a change of scene." So if I refer to a hill try to think of a hill described like that, because I use it a lot.

After a nice short dinner they found themselves walking to the hill that they always went to for solace from the outside world.

The sun had set a while ago giving way to a cooler spring night. Stars were still not quite finished filling the sky, but many had begun to appear in the dark blue night.

Temari sat down as Shikamaru laid on the grass. They both looked at different directions, Shikamaru looking directly up into the sky, while Temari viewed the horizon. No matter where they looked though, the view was the same. Stars twinkling softly with light clouds complimenting the sky.

"It's a beautiful thing," she said. "The night. The cool breeze touching my skin, and the serenity of the environment around us."

Shikamaru smiled. "Yeah. In the beauty of night, other beauties emerge. Take those fireflies for instance, glowing like the stars in the sky. Or the moon, shining a very soft light in a way that makes everything seem more..."

"Beautiful?" Temari suggested.

"Well yeah, but I was thinking of something more imaginative then just that." He smiled and she returned it.

"You know what else is so great about the night?" she asked him.

He turned his head. "What?"

"Your personality. You seem so much happier, so much more calm. Not the sleepy type of calm that you always have, but a more glad sort of calm. You seem like such a different person in the night, when its as soothing as this."

She placed her hand on top of his. "I really like that about you too."

Shikamaru felt his cheeks go hot but he didn't try to hide it.

"The night is also great for another thing," he said in a very simple tone.

"What's that?"

Shikamaru sat up. "It's a time where all flaws seem to disappear, as if the moon's light were some sort of magic. It's a time where one's beauty seems to be even greater than it already is."

She blushed. "Thank you, Shikamaru."

He smirked. "Who said I was talking about you, you troublesome woman? I meant the clouds."

She hit him. Hard.

"Ow!" he shouted. "I was joking."

It was her turn to smirk. "Yeah," she said. "I know." She lied down and laid her head on his lap.

Shikamaru smiled as he rolled his eyes. He leaned on the tree behind him and they stayed like that for a while.

Actually, he smirked as he thought to himself, I really did mean the clouds.

End.
