A/N: Haven't written anything in a while, so I'm a bit...rusty. It's also my first time writing Les Mis fanfiction.

I left out the part about the swing, because that wasn't in the abridged version...and I couldn't figure out a way to put it in after I read the unabridged version.

Eponine looked up from the ground at her mother and this new woman speaking together. The woman had a child about Eponine's age, sleeping in her arms.
" 'Ponine," Eponine's sister, Azelma, tugged at Eponine's shirt, and Eponine looked down at the hole they were digging in the ground. Azelma pointed down at a pink worm that was crawling out of it, laughing delightedly.
Suddenly the little blonde girl who had been with the woman hurried over to them and squatted next to them at the hole. Eponine shifted a little to make room for girl looked nice, and Eponine was kind of tired of playing with Azelma. The three girls leaned farther over the hole, watching the worm slowly inch its way out of the dirt. Eponine wanted to touch the worm, but was worried. Would it bite her? Would it like it? She didn't know.
After a while it disappeared and the girls straightened up again. Azelma yawned, exhausted by their adventure.

"Cosette, come." the blonde girl - Cosette - 's mother came over and picked her up again. Cosette rested her head on her mother's shoulder, her thumb in her mouth. Eponine and Azelma watched rather envious of the two. Their mother had never treated them with such care.

The next day the mother was gone. Cosette didn't even notice. Maybe she was used to her mother being away before she was awake. Eponine noticed that her parents were unusually happy, even when they weren't drinking from those bottles filled with amber liquid. She heard them saying that she and Azelma were good traps. She wondered what that meant for a while, but by the time night fell that had drifted from her mind.

The girl's mother still hadn't returned.

I apologize about the length, I'm thinking about making it longer...
