Matt had seen that look before.
Too many times had he seen those same eyes, that same smile, that same flirtatious posture from dozens of fangirls. Unfortunately for him, this new huntress wasn't a mere fan.
Matt knew he had to talk to Sora.
He took her out to lunch one day at a nearby café that served up some mean cheese fries, and all through lunch he put up with her little flirting comments, her calf-eyes gazes, her 'accidental' touching of his hand. He put up with it and stolidly finished his fries.
"Come on, Sora, let's go to the lake."
She nearly fainted, of course.
"We'll take Garurumon."
And Biyomon had to come to.
Down by the lake shore, Matt skipped a few pebbles while Sora gazed at him, infatuated. Finally he stepped back from the shore, sat down on a cool patch of grass beside her, and looked at her seriously.
"Sora, I know you've got a crush on me." He said finally.
"It's not a crush, Matt, I love you!"
He sighed. "Love it may be, but you've got to stop it."
"What do you mean? You don't like me?"
"No, that's not true at all."
Sora began to get teary-eyed. "It's Mimi, isn't it! She's beautiful and I'm not, so you love her more! Or maybe that Jun witch!"
"No, no, I love you both the same, and Jun..." He shuddered. "But it's not that kind of love. You're two of my best friends."
"Why can't we be together, then?" She demanded.
"How many reasons do you want?"
"What?"
"Look," Matt began, "First off, I can't take you away from Tai. He'd kill me if I did."
"Stupid Tai..." Sora muttered.
"You know that's not true. And don't interrupt me. Not only can I not take you away from Tai, even if I wanted to, it wouldn't be right. You're not the sort who would make a very good Bandleader's wife. You need lots of attention, girl, and I can't give that to you. Besides, would you really want me if you knew I get offers like these every day?"
Sora started sobbing and threw her arms around Matt's shoulders. "I don't want Tai, I want you!"
"That's not true. You and Tai were made for each other from the beginning. Don't use me to get back at him. I can't tell you how many times these past three months, I've seen him glaring at me. Come on, you know you love him."
This brought a fresh burst of sobs from Sora, and Matt patted her back consolingly. "It's ok, just tell him how you feel."
He sat there for a while, letting Sora cry out her grief. He knew she wasn't sobbing because she loved him, rather, she was crying because of her fight with Tai. Over a hairclip again. Matt could have laughed.
Finally they both stood up, brushing their pant legs off , Matt wringing out his shirt.
"I'm sorry, I'll pay to dri-clean that," Sora said, laughing.
"No, it's ok, it's machine washable."
When he heard her laugh, Matt knew it would be ok. Now all he had to do was deal with Mimi....
