"While I Was Sleeping"

She began to fidget, something she always did when she was nervous. Ever since they had received the call that he was here and they should come down, she had been a nervous wreck, wondering what he was going to look like.

When they had called from the hospital, they said he had been in some sort of surfing accident. And she couldn't help but blame herself. Their breakup was difficult for both of them, and perhaps that is what had caused him to be so reckless.

"Excuse me, could you tell me which room Dylan McKay is in please?" The nurse behind the desk took out a clipboard and scanned it for his name. "Room 205, right down the hall."

Brenda Walsh nodded and began walking down the hall. Her Mother, Cindy, had said she would wait in the waiting room until she returned. She took a deep breath as she entered room 205.

Dylan was laying there in the hospital bed, an IV hooked up to his arm, sleeping peacefully. Brenda couldn't help but smile at him. She was the one who had initiated the breakup, but she still felt awful. At the time, she had just thought it was the right thing to do. But now…

She saw that he was stirring as she went to stand beside him. She ran her forefinger along his eyebrow and smile when his eyes fluttered open and he smiled at her as well.

"Thank God you're alright." He nodded and then said something she didn't expect. "It was awesome." She sighed, sitting down in the chair beside the bed. "Dylan, you almost got yourself killed."

He nodded again. "I know. It was stupid, but you should've seen the wave Bren…" He looked at her, getting confused. "What are you doing here, anyway?" She leaned forward. "The police found Brandon's number in your wallet. I called you last night. Why didn't you call me back?"

Dylan sighed. "I couldn't talk to anyone." She looked at him. "Not even me?" He nodded. "Especially not you. I was in shock, and I'm so embarrassed." Brenda shook her head. "You shouldn't be, it's not your fault. Has your Dad seen you?"

Dylan shook his head. "No. His lawyers were here earlier. Someone had to come down and give the hospital permission to treat me." He sighed and didn't say anything else and Brenda didn't want to push.

"Well, I should probably let you get some rest…" But Dylan reached out and took her hand. "You wanna know something Bren? I had a lot of thoughts, a lot of dreams while I was asleep. And they were all about you."

Brenda couldn't help but smile. "I know you said you wanted time away because you were scared, but I'm scared too Bren. It shouldn't matter that we're scared, we should just be together. We love each other."

She knew he was right, they did love each other. "You're all I think about Brenda, whether I'm awake or asleep, in my dreams or my daydreams, all I think about is you. All I want is you."

He pulled her down toward him. "I love you Brenda. And it was the thought of you that brought me back. It was the thought of you that made me want to live again, it made me want to be alive, with you."

Brenda felt tears welling up in her eyes. "Dylan…I love you too. So much. Staying away from you was the hardest thing I've ever had to do." She kissed him softly, not wanting to hurt him, but he deepened the kiss.

"God I've missed you.", He murmured, kissing her on the forehead. She nodded and said, "Me too." He looked at her. "Stay with me for awhile." She nodded and smiled. "I wouldn't dream of being anywhere else."
