Chapter 1 Thomas, Percy and the Coal
24th of January 2019
Marco, Frieda, Nia and some other engines were standing In the Knapford Goods Yard. It was late in the evening and he wanted to tell them some of his stories again.
"Well Marco. Whatcha gonna tell us today." Rebecca asked exited.
"Well, how about that one time Thomas and Percy had problems with the thing we all need the most." The black engine said.
"Air? How can someone possibly have problems with air." Phillip said.
"No not air...I'm not even sure if we even breathe." Marco corrected him." I mean Coal."
"But Phillip is a diesel. He doesn't need it." Nia stated.
"Yeah. That is right." The Boxcab diesel added.
"It's not important right now. Should I tell you it or not." He asked them slightly annoyed.
Everyone said yes and he started to tell the story.
1950 (Marco's P.O.V)
It was a few days after the incident with Alfred and Cecil and Toby and I were sent to Knapford Harbor. "I can't believe what happened here. I never thought that those two B12's were such maniacs." The brown tram said as we reached the points that guided us towards the Gunpowder factory. It was still messy there due to the explosion. The tracks were destroyed and a huge hole was in the ground.
"Oh my. It's almost worse than I thought." I exclaimed as I examined the damage.
"Yeah, Yeah it's terrible. Help me with the Trucks here. We need to clear up here anyway and these Vans are in the way." Toby said as he went to some empty vans, which stood on a siding that was undamaged. He then coupled up to them and pulled them away.
"To bad this factory is going to relocate to the Docks in the south of Suddery." I sighed." It was a bit convenient that they were up here near Knapford."
"Indeed. Now we have to travel that far if we need gunpowder at the Quarry." Our number seven complained and brought the vans somewhere else.
The workmen then left the Coach I had behind me and began to clean up the debris." I hope Amethyst comes soon. We need to fill that hole with stones or gravel."
And just when I said it I heard her whistle." Alright. Here it is. The gravel ya ordered." She said lazily as usual and uncoupled from the trucks with the needed ballast.
"Thanks Amy." I said." How's it going at the quarry by the way?"
"Er...pretty good. I'm doing my best, even though I don't really wanna even wanna do work." The purple saddle tank answered and soon she left.
I stopped her before she was gone." Hey Ames."
"Huh?"
"You're not a failure."
"What?"
"I said you are not a failed engine." I repeated. I felt kinda sorry for her because I was recently told that she was insulted by Alfred, Cecil and other big engines from her time before she came to the NWR." You might be smaller than the average saddle tank engine and also are probably the laziest engine I know, but you are still reliable if it's needed. And also thanks for guarding me back then in the Steamworks."
"Oh...well...thanks and...no problem Marc. You would have done the same." Then she finally left.
I stayed there and watched the workmen cleaning up and filling the crater with the load of gravel.
Amethyst was on her way to Ffahrquar to get back to the quarry. She still had some jobs to do.
The purple saddle tank approached the small goods yard of Ffarquhar. Her bunker was almost empty and she ran low on water. So Amethyst decided to refill.
Thomas and Percy were meanwhile busy at the Coal Hopper. The E2 was getting new coal and the green saddle tank was filling up some trucks.
" 'Sup Guys." She greeted them and stopped next to the Hoppers.
"Hey Amethyst." Thomas said.
"Hey Amy." Percy greeted back." Where were you."
"I was at the docks. They needed some gravel. So what are you two up to." The purple saddle tank asked.
"Well. I was about to do another passenger run and Percy wanted to fill these trucks with coal." The blue E2 explained.
"Sounds swell. I'm also gonna refill and then I'm heading back to the quarry." Amethyst said and waited until Thomas was done.
While the two waited, Percy was pulling the Trucks under the coal hopper. He stopped and the first one was filled immediately. This gave the trucks a idea how they can piss off three engines at once. They waited until Percy was filling the last truck with coal and then it happened. Those little shits pushed him forwards into a set of buffers.
The workmen couldn't react in time and coal came out the Hopper and landed on the track Due to a unfortunate malfunction the hopper didn't stop and coal fell out until a huge pile covered Thomas and Amethyst, who stood next to It.
"Aw...shit ah...I've got coal dust in my lungs." Coughed Thomas.
"Do we even have lungs." Amethyst said to herself. Luckily she wasn't as much covered in dust as the E2, but she still was pissed off.
"God damit Percy. What the heck was that." He growled.
"It's not my fault. These trucks pushed me." The green engine shouted back, feeling offended.
"Guys. It's no use of arguing right now. I know what will happen next. You will hate each other for a few days until Percy has an equal accident. Then you'll be friends again. So stop bitchin around and let the workmen clean that shit up." Amethyst groaned.
"Fine...it was the trucks' fault." Both tank engine said. Some workmen came with shovels and cleaned the mess up. Some lumps were loaded into the bunkers of Thomas and Amethyst, so they don't have to go under the hopper again.
"What do you mean I can't get cleaned up now." Thomas asked angrily. He was still dirty from the dust.
"Sorry. But your train is running late. If you get cleaned up now it will be even later." His driver explained.
"Oh you have to be kidding me. I won't pull Annie and Clarabel while being so dirty. It would be a shame for the Ffarquhar branch." The E2 said.
"Well. How 'bout I pull them. I'm the cleanest of us three." Percy suggested.
"Um and what about Toby." The blue engine asked.
"Still busy at the harbor." Amethyst answered." Let the little guy pull your coaches. Just this once. Give him a chance."
"Uh. Fine. But don't try to screw this up." Thomas gave in and went to do Percy's jobs, since someone has to to it.
The green saddle tank coupled up to Annie and Clarabel. Then he went to the Ffarquhar station.
The Passengers were confused. Instead of Thomas, a green tank engine stood at the platform." What happened to Thomas. He usually pulls the passenger trains on this line." A man in a brown suit asked.
"He's busy right now and I was asked to do this." Percy answered smiling.
"Oh well...i hope you're as reliable as him. Or else I want my money back. This train is already five minutes late." The man growled angrily and climbed aboard Annie.
The guard blew his whistle and Percy went of to Hackenbeck station. He ran smoothly along the track, even though he never pulled coaches before." I must admit my dear sister, he isn't that bad as I expected." Annie stated.
"Indeed. Is this your first passenger run Percy." Clarabel asked.
"Uh yeah. Am I doing good. I actually don't know how to handle coaches so sorry I I'm doing something wrong." The green saddle tank apologized.
"Oh don't worry. Your pretty good." The first coach confirmed.
"Oh well. Thanks...by the way were almost at Hackenbeck." Percy said and kept on rolling along the line.
Meanwhile Thomas and Amethyst were still busy at Ffarquhar. He was shunting coal trucks and she came with some stone trucks from the quarry.
"So...how do you feel about it that Percy pulls your coaches." The purple saddle tank asked.
Thomas just sighed." Well, it's a bit complicated. I mean I'm happy for him. We tank engines don't get much chances to pull passenger trains. But I'm a bit concerned about how he'll do the job. If he does it bad...then the Ffarquhar branch gets bad reviews. But if he's better than me, then maybe the passengers prefer him and I lose my job." He explained.
"Hey don't worry. He wont take your Job. It's your branch line after all. You earned it because you once saved James. He wont do your jobs just because he does it better." Amethyst assured him.
"Thanks Ames. I never thought you were that wise. Is everything ok with you by the way." The E2 asked curiously.
"Sure...sure...everything's fine. Nothin happened." She answered hasty and left the yard." I better bring these trucks to the Harbor."
Thomas was slightly confused by her. She behaved pretty strange since Alfred and Cecil were defeated. He decided not to think about it to much and continued shunting.
That evening at Tidmouth Sheds were the engines talking about something." Well. I'm glad that this problems with these B12's are solved." Edward said.
" Indeed Edward. Even though those two came from the LNER, they were horrible monsters and a shame for that railway." Gordon agreed.
" Did you heard the news by the way. They're planning to unite the Big Four railways and make one big Railway for the entire United kingdom." Henry asked.
"Oh yeah. They're going to call it "British Railways" a stupid idea if ya ask me. That's Rabbish." James said a bit angrily.
"Um does this unification also affect the Northwestern Railway." Percy asked.
"No Percy. We're a independent railway and don't need such a unification. Also the Fat Controller won't let that happen." Thomas answered.
"Well. I hope just because they're all uniting, doesn't it change things to much." I said, standing on the track next to the sheds. I was so wrong back then, because the shit was about to go down in a few years.
"Who knows. I know that there are engines who don't use coal or steam to run. They use fuel like cars or lorries and some use electricity." Edward said.
"They'll never be better than steam engines. We're always reliable and on time." Gordon said and then we all went to sleep.
