The Polaris Noctis

Chapter I

A Cry In The Fog

As first morning dew began to set into a deep fog that lay over the streets, a bitter chill surrounded the air and nothing could be heard. However, the faint sound of footsteps began to slowly break the silence. At this early hour, not a shop was open and not a soul was awake.

A man in a tattered cloak stumbled through the empty streets, panting horribly. His left hand trembled frantically as his right grasped tightly to his wand. Sweat dripped from his palms, as his dark eyes shifted in every direction, checking for signs of life. Upon finding nothing, he immediately slipped out of sight into a vacant alley. At the end of the alley, a dark figure could be seen. The fleeing man looked up and saw the face of Lord Voldemort staring at him through his scarlet eyes. The man stopped dead in his tracks and quickly ran opposite the Dark Lord, only to find a wand pointed straight at his face.

"End of the line, Igor," a curt voice spoke softly. Behind Voldemort appeared two more death-eaters, each pointing their wand at Karkaroff.

"And so it is, Lucius, but not for me." Just as suddenly as he pointed his wand at the pale death-eater, it was flung out of his grasp and caught by Bellatrix Lestrange, who was standing just behind him.

"Oh no, it appears you misunderstood me. I was, indeed, referring to you," Malfoy said contently, his wand still pointed directly at the former death-eater's face.

"Enough talk! Die, traitor! Avada Kedavra!!" shouted Bellatrix, as a blinding, emerald light shot form the tip of her and hit the defenseless wizard. From miles could be heard a brief scream of agony, as Karkaroff fell lifelessly to the cold cobblestone below.

Voldemort approached the dead body and for many seconds stared directly into his dark eyes, as if to lust his soul. "Now that we have removed one vermin from our path, it is time to destroy the other," he hissed.

Wormtail stepped forward, inquiring, "What about the boy, my lord? Potter?"

In response, Voldemort said, "Later, Wormtail…later, but very soon."
