My first Blood+ fic! This takes place at the end of the series, after Saya falls asleep again.

Disclaimer: I don't own Blood+

Sometimes she dreamed.

She wasn't sure what she saw in her dreams. Mostly there were people, flitting in and out of the shadows. There was a tall man who said nothing but watched her with dark eyes. Sometimes when she saw him he was playing a cello, and the music that sang from the strings was struck a chord inside her that filled her with familiarity, and at the same time made her ache.

There was small boy whose face shone with simple happiness and light. His laughter bubbled up into the air and followed her through her visions. There was another boy with spiky hair and green eyes. Sometimes he spoke and she could never make out the words but his smile was enough - small, familiar, somehow reassuring.

To her, these people were strangers. Yet sometimes she thought she knew them. She would be watching the little boy laugh, the way his face tilted up and his eyes shone, and she would think she had seen that face before. Once, he had been part of her. Then the moment would pass and she would be watching him from a distance again, wondering who he was.

They were mysteries to her, pieces of a puzzle that would not fit. She longed to know them, to reach out for them and have them reach back. In her dreams, she never wondered who she was. She dreamed only of them, over and over again, the same people who never grew any closer to her no matter how many times she saw them.

And she would dream like this until she woke one day, and began to remember herself once again. But before then, she would keep seeing those faces hovering just out of reach.

They were fragments of dreams, but they were much more than that. They were the faces of her family. They were inside of her.

They faded in and out of her visions, keeping watch over her as she slept.
