It was nothing but turmoil in Bramblestar's heart as he gazed down at Squirrelflight's still body. He could feel tears forming in hs eyes and he watched them. He watched them, falling down, just like Squirrelflight had when she tumbled over the edge of the hidden chasm. He had tried to go down and rescue her but his warriors held him back, causing him distress.
"Are you alright?" He heard Sandstorm's voice break the silence of the dribbling rain. He felt an urge to lash out, but realized he was too tired to do anything. "Is Squirrelflight okay?" He replied instead, not thinking straight.
It was quiet once again, and Bramblestar heard Sandstorm exit his den. Closing his weary eyes, the leader waited for morning to come.
It was morning once again and the leader woke up, waiting for Squirrelflight's voice to barge in and give him a nuzzle. But the bird chirps only greeted him, and Bramblestar reluctantly padded out of his den, into the cold morning. He greeted the warriors with a flick of his tail, before calling Rosepetal over. "Could you please prepare a patrol?"
Before the warrior could reply, Bramblestar padded out of camp. He wasn't headed anywhere particular, as he was too focused on yesterday.
"Watch out!" A voice called out before knocking him back. The confused leader swiped his paw out, barely missing his "attacker".
"Who are you?" Bramblestar called out, pinning the other cat down. As his vision cleared, he saw Squirrelflight's face from last night. No! What have I done? A flurry of thoughts suddenly intruded into his empty mind, and he could feel panic rising up his throat.
"Calm down Bramblestar, it's me, Lionblaze!" She spoke, except she didn't use her own voice.
"Wait, Lionblaze? What are you doing here? Where's Squirrelflight?" Bramblestar was starting to get stressed out, and the warrior rested his tail on the leader's shoulder before answering.
"Sandstorm told me to look after you. Good thing I got here before you got the same fate as your mate." Lionblaze replied with a serious tone.
Wait! That's it! I can see Squirrelflight, if I go to StarClan too! Bramblestar felt hope again in his heart as he gazed down at the chasm below. He took a step forward.
"Don't you dare!" Lionblaze interuppted his thoughts and pulled him back. "We cannot affore another death! C'mon, let's go back." He gently guided the sorrowful leader back towards camp.
Don't worry Squirrelflght, I'll be with you soon. The leader thought before padding back into his den, plotting his plan.
Midnight struck and Bramblestar quietly crawled out, passing the fast-asleep guard. It was time. He silently sneaked out the entrance and into the forest, spotting the chasm nearby.
Feeling excited, he hurried forward and stopped at the edge, then gazed down. It was dark, and the tabby couldn't see the bottom. It was perfect.
"I'm coming, Squirrelflight." He whispered, and dove into the darkness, plunging through the chasm.
Thump. His body was pierced by a sharp stone, and Bramblestar coughed out blood before smiling.
I'm coming.
