Sherlock causes John to...
Sherlock causes John to gaze in awe. The things that he can deduct just from things that no one else would notice, like the splash marks on the back of the woman's leg meaning that she was only staying in London one night. Sherlock is definitely a genius.
Sherlock causes John to gaze in shock. What 29 year old doesn't know, or care, that the earth goes round the sun? What man would continually risk his life just to show off his brain? Sherlock is also defiantly an idiot.
Sherlock causes John to feel alive. The life of a civilian is something he cannot adapt to, he is a soldier. For his biggest worry to be money and not if he was going to live was something that felt innately wrong. Sherlock was John's key to another war and one he could still fight.
Sherlock causes John to believe in himself. To still trust his instinct, to know that he could shoot a bullet through two windows and still fatally hit a man.
Sherlock causes John to think. Forcing him to look at everything, he might not get there as quickly as Sherlock or as well, but he is definitely learning. Lestrade has taken to calling him for help when they are stuck and Sherlock says it is too dull. John is now the only other consulting detective in the world.
But most of all Sherlock causes John to feel human and not a machine bred for war and good for nothing else.
