John causes Sherlock to...

John causes Sherlock to laugh. Proper laughs of the type he can never remember having before. Even as a child Sherlock never really laughed, not with someone. He would laugh at their ignorance, but never with a friend. The thing that shocks Sherlock the most is how when he laughs at John, which is happening less and less now, John doesn't care. Now, the laughter is of real amusement and Sherlock likes having someone to share those moments with.

John causes Sherlock to feel. Sherlock never really felt anything before, apart from annoyance at the stupidity of the world. Only now, he feels what he thinks is happiness. He doesn't mind having to watch things that he previously held no interest for like James Bond. It was full of problems but he got over that easily and found himself enjoying it, something that definitely wouldn't have happened before Dr Watson entered his life.

John causes Sherlock to care. He doesn't know when it started but he has definitely started caring for others or maybe it was just those John cared about, Sherlock wasn't sure. But, it had started by the first time they met Moriarty, he had cared for that women and child and had thought John had seen that. When John had asked him if he cared, Sherlock felt hurt so he replied in the only way he knew how, with a harsh tongue and words that he wished he could retract as soon as they left his mouth.

John causes Sherlock to love. He wormed his way into the heart that Sherlock hadn't even known existed. It happened so slowly, unnoticeably until all that Sherlock knew revolved in some way around his flat mate and there was nothing Sherlock could do about it.

But most of all John causes Sherlock to be human and not a machine that watched from the sidelines, seeing but not understanding.
