"BEEP! BEEP!
BEEP!"
SMACK, her hand fell on her obnoxious
alarm clock.
"Stupid thing, it's always early," she
mumbled, "I've got twenty minutes left to sleep," and she rolled over. She was soon asleep and dreaming about the
lifeguard she had a huge crush on. His
name was Dasan, he had short wavy brown hair, and was very ten.
"Nikki! Get up!" screamed her mother,
frantic, "You're late!"
"Huh?" Nikki was confused, "Oh no! 9:03!?! We have to leave in...12 minutes!" She scrambled out of bed and threw on a tank top and shorts. Running down the stairs, she tripped over a
stack of books and almost fell the rest of the way down. "Oh! My Harry Potter books! I almost forgot them!" She grabbed the books and threw them into
her backpack.
Quickly pulling her long, brown hair
into a sloppy ponytail, she grabbed a banana and raced to the car where her mom
was waiting. "C'mon! Let's go! I don't want to miss the bus to camp!"
"All right, all right, we're going,"
said her mom. Nikki was destined for a
sailing camp with two of her friends Olivia and Ember whom she planned to
meet at the high school that served as a bus stop. Olivia was a pretty girl with dark, curly hair who Nikki had
known since second grade. Ember, Em for
short, had long, brown, curly hair and met Nikki at camp the year before.
"So," said Nikki's mom, "Do you know
anybody else going to camp besides Olivia and Em?"
"Yeah, " mumbled Nikki through a
mouthful of banana, "some other people from last year are going too." And Dasan, she added to herself. The rest of the ride was quiet except for
the music on the radio.
When they finally got to the school,
Nikki could see Olivia and Ember waving from under the shade of a large
tree. Nikki left her bags by the pile,
checked in, and went to sit with her friends and their families. Once the parents were talking amongst
themselves, the three girls chatted excitedly about the month to come.
"This is going to be so fun!"
Said Em.
"Oooohhh! I know!" Said Olivia, "hey Nik, isn't Dasan going?"
"Yeah," Nikki sighed, "he is sooo hot!" Ember and Olivia rolled their eyes. "What?
He is."
"Yeah, yeah, we know," said Em, "Hey the buses are here!"
"Come on, let's go get good seats,"
said Nikki in an attempt to draw attention away from how much she liked Dasan.
When they reached the bus, they gave
their names to the counselor at the doors, and boarded the bus to find
seats. On the way to camp, they chatted
with other teens who'd be in their Sailing II group. One boy, who looked to be about sixteen, caught Nikki's
attention.
"He looks so familiar," she thought,
"but who is he?" Try as she might Nikki
just couldn't figure out who he was. He
had messy black hair with bangs that hid his forehead, bright green eyes, and
round glasses. Nikki also noticed he
seemed different from everyone else.
She wasn't sure how. She just
knew that he didn't fit in somehow.
