Karen Cent was a red-haired woman. During her high school and college years, she was interested in becoming a lawyer. She thought it'd be a worthwhile and profitable career. She event spent a few months, taking classes about the subject.
However, an agent saw potential in Karen, to become a model, rather than a lawyer. At first, Karen was skeptical about the idea. She decided to give the agent a chance and go to one photoshoot. She posed, while wearing a fancy, green dress. The photographers were so impressed by her appearance, that they took hundreds of pictures.
The first photoshoot earned the agent a ton of money and Karen became far more well-known. Karen wasn't used to getting such attention and she was loving how she felt. She decided to accept the agent's offer and become a full-time model. She gave up, on trying to be a lawyer. She started thinking, that being a model would be a much more successful and profitable career.
Karen modeled for various different things, including magazines, TV ads, and various other products. She was very known and beloved, especially in her hometown, Gotham. Gotham was a very dangerous city, which a lot of people didn't have fond opinions about.
In order to give Gotham some respect and creditability, Mayor Hamilton Hill thought it'd be best, if Karen was one of Gotham's top icons. He called Karen's agent and scheduled a meeting, between himself and Karen.
A few days later, Karen stepped into Mayor Hamilton Hill's face. Mayor Hill had a friendly smile on his face, while saying, "Greetings, Karen Cent. It's an honor and a privilege, to be in your presence."
Karen shook the Mayor's hand and replied, "Thank you, Mayor Hill. The agent didn't give me too many details, but he told me this visit was important."
Mayor Hill replied, "Your agent was incredibly honest. Gotham has been dealing with some of their worst type of luck."
Karen had a relaxed smile on her face, while saying, "When I need some good luck, I rely on an old friend of mine." Karen pulled a penny out of her jacket and flipped it.
Mayor Hill said, "If I may ask, what's up with the coin?"
Karen replied, "Because of my last name, I got an attachment for coins. I know this may sound weird, but I think this cent of mine brings me good luck."
Mayor Hill responded, "Believe me, Gotham needs lots of that."
Karen raised an eyebrow and asked, "What do you mean? From what I've heard, I live in one of the world's most adventurous cities."
Mayor Hill walked around the room, while replying, "Adventurous is a flattering way of describing it, but a lot of people don't share that sentiment. Thanks to all of Gotham's nutcases, including the inmates of Arkham Asylum and Batman, Gotham has a lot of respect."
Karen was surprised Mayor Hill would include Batman, as one of Gotham's problems. She asked, "What do you have against Batman?"
Mayor Hill answered, "That morally-questionable vigilante has brought lots of trouble, for this formerly-dignified city. Due to his costumed antics, several more themed-criminals came about. Frankly, I'm starting to think Batman should trying to be Gotham's knight in dark armor." He straightened his tie, while saying, "I believe Gotham needs a better role-model. The kids, teens, and adults need someone to look up to, someone they can smile at, and have fond opinions about."
Karen asked, "Are you talking about?"
Mayor Hill answered, "I sure am. You're young, but smart, mature, and very popular. You wear dignified, fancy outfits, instead of bat-themed costumes, that should only be worn on Halloween."
Karen fiddled with her coin, while saying, "I must admit it's a flattering offer. What would I have to do?"
Mayor Hill replied, "Once a week, you'd make a public appearance, in Gotham, and say words of positivity and inspiration."
Karen was opposed to the idea, of performing in Gotham, on such a regular basis. She was used to going to various cities. That helped her meet more people, become more famous, and make more cash. However, she figured she could get something big, if she agreed to the Mayor's offer. Karen said, "I'd agree to your deal, if you can make a request happen."
Mayor Hill tried to avoid getting nervous, while asking, "What's your request?"
Karen answered, "I want my own building. I want a building, with a big sign, that has my name on it. I've been a performing artist, for a few months. It's been nice and all, but having a main locations, that constantly focuses on yours truly, sounds rather nice."
Mayor Hill put his hand on his chin, while thinking about Karen's offer. He dug around hiss files and tried to find out if he had any big and stylish buildings, that he could give to Karen. After finding one, the Mayor looked at Karen and said, "Your offer sounds fair enough. If you'll agree to be Gotham's weekly performer, the building will be all yours."
Karen smiled and replied, "Very well then, Mayor Hill." She and the Mayor shook hands.
Karen walked out of Mayor Hill's office. Her butler came by and used a limo, to give Karen a ride home. While in her limo, Karen gave her agent a call. She told him, about the deal she made. She was expecting her agent to be cool with the deal, but he wasn't.
Karen's agent said, "You shouldn't of agreed to that deal. You should of at least gotten my two cents, before you made such a risky decision."
Karen replied, "Listen, you're a wise guy and I trust your opinions, but I'm a grown-up, whose capable of making these type of choices." She played with her coin, while saying, "I don't see how this offer could be a bad thing. I'm going to be getting my own building, which is sure to boost my popularity."
Karen's agent responded, "But think about all the money you'll lose, because you won't be able to perform in other cities."
Karen calmly said, "Things are going to be perfectly fine."
Karen's agent replied, "Karen, instead of thinking things out, you make reckless decisions."
Karen defensively responded, "Hey, you made me quickly give up my chances at being a lawyer, so I could become a model."
An hour later, Mayor Hill had a meeting with Roland Daggett. Roland Daggett was a corrupt, cruel businessman. Despite that, several people thought he was a responsible, good businessman, who had great intentions. One of those overly-trusting citizens was Mayor Hill. Mayor had previously made arrangements with Daggett, about getting him a new building, for his business.
Roland tried to cover his evil smugness, by having a pleasant-looking smile across his face. He said, "Greetings, Mayor Hill. It's nice to see you."
Mayor Hill replied, "It's always a treat, to be visited by you. After all, you're one of Gotham's finest businessmen."
Roland had a flattered look on his face, while saying, "Thank you, Mayor Hill. Speaking of that, I believe it's time we got down to business. I hired a top-notch crew, who are going to some re-designs to the building. I'm going to make it look better, than you could ever imagine."
Mayor Hill started looking nervous while saying, "I'm afraid I brought you here for news, that's not the highest of quality."
Roland tried to hold back a frown, while asking, "What are you talking about?"
Mayor Hill said, "You see, a young model, named Karen Cent, has become interested in getting her own building. There weren't that many buildings in Gotham, that fit her qualifications, so I gave her the building, that I was going to give to you."
Roland was very angry about this news. However, he avoided having an angry outburst, to avoid showing his true colors. He put his hand on his chin, while saying, "I see. This isn't the type of news I was expecting, Mr. Mayor."
Mayor Hill started sweating, while replying, "I'm deeply sorry about this disappointing news, Mr. Daggett. I hope you can understand the situation and forgive me."
Roland replied, "I totally understand. Everything's going to be okay. If Karen Cent is so important to the city of Gotham, I'm willing to except that. It seems like she's going to be keeping the building. If she changes her mind, about wanting the building, please give me a call."
Mayor Hill responded, "Okay." He and Roland shook hands.
Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne was watching a news report, which was about Karen Dent making weekly appearances in Gotham. Bruce looked at his butler, Alfred Pennyworth, and said, "This seems like good news."
Alfred had an amused look on his face, while replying, "I know why you feel that way."
Bruce raised an eyebrow and said, "Excuse me?"
Alfred replied, "You're excited, because Gotham's biggest model is going to be around more often."
Bruce responded, "Alfred, you're starting to make me sound like a lovesick rich-boy. Although I pretended to be an immature playboy, I could care less about supermodels and stuff like that."
Alfred replied, "Yeah right."
Roland Daggett drove to his current business building, which was old and wasn't in fantastic condition. He had a meeting with his henchmen, so he could explain the situation to them. He paced around the henchmen, while saying, "Karen Cent is giving me a priceless amount of trouble. She convinced Mayor Hill, to give her the building, which would of been mine."
One of the henchmen, who was concerned about Roland, asked, "Are you okay?"
Roland rolled his eyes and pushed the henchman, while saying, "Gentlemen, the ones of you, who have brain, know the type of guy I am. I'm not a pushover and above all else, I'm not a loser. In this current situation of mine, I'm not exactly the winner and we need to change that."
One of the henchmen raised his hand and asked, "What are we supposed to do?"
Roland answered, "We have to stop Karen Cent from wanting the building. Talking someone, out of such a nice and worthwhile building, is hardly easy. Instead of talking my way through this, I believe a kidnapping is in order." He wrote Karen's address on several pieces of paper and handed a copy of it, to each of the henchmen. Roland said, "Karen Cent must be brought to my office. Whoever accomplishes this will get a sweet raise. Now, go kidnap her." Roland had an evil smile on his face, while the henchmen started walking out of the building.
The henchmen came to Karen Cent's house and knocked on the door. Karen wasn't known for making the wisest of decisions, so she opened the door, instead of checking her door's peep hole. The henchmen started grabbing her, while explaining the situation. Karen didn't want to get beaten up and she knew she couldn't defeat the henchmen, so she agreed to come with them.
Several minutes later, Karen was brought to Roland's office. Roland tried to have an inviting smile on her face, while saying, "Greetings, Karen Cent. I've seen a few of your public performances, but this is our first encounter."
Karen frowned at Roland and asked, "What the heck is going on? Why did you have your immature-looking henchmen bring me there. If I hadn't agreed to come, they would of beaten me up. You could lose your business, for having such careless henchmen."
Roland replied, "Speaking of my business, you've costed me a lot."
Karen had a confused look on her face, while asking, "What are you talking about?"
Roland paced around the room, while saying, "You see, the building, that Mayor Hill gave you, was supposed to be given to me."
Karen replied, "Considering what an unfriendly welcome you gave me, I doubt you deserved that building."
Roland had a smug smile on his face, while saying, "I'm not known, for being the nicest of businessmen. However, when there's something I want, I make my dreams a reality. My current dream is getting that building and if you don't cooperate, you're going to be in tons of trouble."
Karen didn't want to face Roland's wrath, so she decided to be open-minded and listen to Roland's deal. She folded her arms and said, "In order to avoid your antics, what do I have to do?"
Roland calmly replied, "You only need to do one thing: Give up the building."
Karen shook her head and responded, "I'm not going to do that. I've had to give up a lot, to become a model. I could of been a lawyer or something more respectable, but I knew being a model would give me more cash. You're not going to take my building away."
Roland replied, "I relate and admire, to your dedication of money. However, my small feeling of sentimentality is going to do you any favors. I'm a semi-fair man, so I'm going to give you another chance. Please agree to my offer."
Karen stubbornly responded, "I'm not going to do that."
Roland replied, "Very well then." He had several batches of dangerous chemicals, which were hidden in one of his cabinets. Karen tried to run out of the room, but a few henchmen grabbed her. Roland had an evil smile on his face, while getting a batch of dangerous chemicals ready. He tried to throw it across her face, but it only landed on half her face. She punched the henchmen and ran out.
The henchmen were going to run after her, but Roland said, "You don't need to do that. I messed up half of her face and without a pretty face, her supermodel career is history. Because of that, she'll be giving up her precious building and I'm going to obtain it." He did an evil laugh.
Karen went home. After getting inside her house, she ran to her mirror and checked on her face. Half of her face had turned purple, because of the chemicals. She had a furious look, on her two-sided face. She was more mad at Roland, than she had ever been, at any person.
Karen walked around the room, while asking herself, "What am I supposed to do? Being beautiful is one of thee most important things, when it comes to being a supermodel. In fact, it might be the most important thing. Perhaps, I should of listened to my agent's advice and avoided Mayor Hill's offer. Since I didn't do that, I've become a freak."
Karen continued walking across her house, while asking, "What am I supposed to do with my life?" She put her hand on her chin, while saying, "I wonder if I could become a lawyer." She thought her new face and said, "That's not going to work. Because of how repulsive I've become, I'll never be getting another classy job. It's doubtful, that I'll ever be accepted by society. My fame has ended."
A mischievous look came upon her two-sided face, while saying, "I wonder if I should get revenge on Roland Daggett." She pulled out her coin and decided she'd get revenge on Roland, if the coin landed on tails. She flipped the coin, which landed on tails.
The next day, Mayor Hill had another meeting with Roland Daggett. Karen had called her agent and told her to give away the building. Mayor Hill looked at Roland and said, "Karen Cent has given up the building."
Roland pretended to look surprised, while saying, "What an interesting turn of events."
Mayor Hill said, "In addition to that, it seems like Karen's going to stop making public appearances. I don't know why this is happening, but it's bad for Gotham."
Roland calmly replied, "Don't worry. I'm going to be doing great things, after I obtain the building."
Mayor Hill had a relieved look on his face, while saying, "I'm delighted to be hearing that. You're one of Gotham's most reliable citizens. With Karen turning down my offer, Gotham is losing the icon it needs. I believe you can be the positive influence and role-model that Gotham needs. Would you be willing, to make a few public appearances? If you did that, I'd give you a good sum of money."
Roland grinned and responded, "That's an excellent offer, Mayor Hill. I'm going to accept it." He and Mayor Hill shook hands.
A few weeks later, a fancy press-filled event happened, to celebrate Roland Daggett's new building. Several photographers and reporters came.
Mayor Hill was amongst the crowd, who had a lot of confidence in Roland. He nudged Bruce Wayne and said, "Roland Daggett's the positive influence, that Gotham's been needing. Batman's been a bad influence, for long enough." Bruce could hardly believe what he was hearing and he wasn't happy about it. In order to protect his secret identity, he didn't comment on it.
Roland Daggett had a smug smile on his face, while walking up to the ribbon and cutting it. However, two minutes later, Karen showed. Instead of being called Karen Cent, she changed her name to Two-Face. Two-Face faced Roland. The crowd reacted in horror, at Two-Face's face. Bruce snuck away from the crowd, so he could change into Batman.
Mayor Hill looked scared, while saying, "Karen, what's happened to you?"
Two-Face fiddled with her coin, while saying, "Roland Daggett ruined my face, as well as my career. Because of that, I'm going to get revenge on him." Roland tried to run away, but Two-Face punched him in the stomach and flung him to the ground. She grabbed him and said, "You're going to come with me."
Roland asked, "Where are you going to take me?"
Two-Face said, To your office. I'm going to use the chemicals, to ruin your face. That way, you'll look as horrific, as you are, deep down." She picked up Roland and started running into his building.
Batman showed up. He looked at Mayor Hill and asked, "What's going on?"
Mayor Hill didn't usually trust Batman. However, because of he was running out of options, he told Batman about the situation. He also told him where Two-Face and Roland were.
Two-Face dragged Roland into his office. She opened his cabinet and started looking for the chemicals. Roland had hidden them, but after a few minutes of digging around, Two-Face found a batch of chemicals. She started getting the chemicals ready, while saying, "I'm going to give you more pain, than you could ever imagine." She did an evil laugh, while Roland kept getting more nervous.
A few minutes later, Batman burst into the building. He started walking up to Two-Face, while saying, "Karen Cent, I'm very sorry you lost your previous appearance and your career. However, I don't think it's too late, for you to have a successful life."
Two-Face asked, "What are you talking about?"
Batman said, "You can became your dream, of being a lawyer."
Two-Face replied, "Yeah right."
Batman said, "There will be judgmental people, who won't accept your new appearance. However, there's plenty of good, open-minded people, who will accept you for you are."
Two-Face replied, "I'm not believing that nonsense." She grabbed the chemicals and was throw them at Roland. However, Batman threw a batarang, which knocked the chemicals to the ground. Two-Face was planning on making another batch of chemicals, but Batman ran to her and planned on stopping her. Two-Face punched Batman a few times. Although she had a few fighting skills, she hadn't learned enough, to stop Batman. Batman felt sorry for her, so he gave her small punches and didn't attack her that hard.
After the fight was over, Batman put handcuffs on Two-Face. Two-Face angrily sighed and said, "I'm going to jail, aren't I?"
Batman shook his head and replied, "No, you're going to a mental asylum. The place is full of caring, respectable workers, who are going to give you the treatment you deserve." Batman gently took Two-Face, to the mental ward's truck.
Two-Face flipped her coin, to decide if she'd give this place a chance and believe what Batman said, about some people being open-minded. If the coin landed on heads, she'd do that. She flipped the coin, which landed on heads. She smiled at Batman. Batman raised his thumbs up, while Two-Face was taken away.
Roland looked at Batman and said, "You should of given that monster a proper beating."
Batman frowned at Roland and replied, "You're the monster."
Mayor Hill walked up to Batman and shook his hand. The Mayor looked ashamed, while saying, "I've misjudged several people, including you. I thought you were Gotham's main source of conflict. I couldn't of been more wrong. You're the bright knight of Gotham. Keep on brightening things up, Mr. Batman. I believe in you." Batman smiled at him and ran away. Despite everything that had happened, Batman believed in Two-Face and Gotham City and believed both of those things would improve, in the future.
