The night was quiet and still, and yet he lay with a conscious troubled by his own suspicions of another's actions. He had been unable to sleep well ever since the first time he'd seen them whispering with the young man he did not approve of associating so closely with his family and yet who had managed to practically move in with them leaning in too close to his son, their eyes dancing with mischief he'd not have under his roof. He had complained, but Marion had told him he was making up something that wasn't there. He was not at all convinced, and so it was that, as he lay there, half in and out of sleep, a hushed noise caused him to jump up and bump his head.
"There!" he exclaimed, his own bolstering voice sounding much louder than the one who had caused him to jump to attention and bump the bed so hard that his wife could not help but to be awakened. "There! Now you tell me, Marion, why on Earth would Fonzie be hollering 'Ayyyyyy' in the middle of the night?!"
"Howard, it's scarcely the middle of the night! We've only just gone to bed . . . "
"Bullocks! It's four o'clock in the morning!"
"Well, he did have a young woman visiting him this evening . . . "
"In his apartment, Marion, not in our house!" He threw the covers off and started to roll to a sitting position but stopped in surprise when Marion reached out and ran her fingers through the lower part of his hair.
"You're so cute when you get ruffled over nothing." She looked up at him with veiled eyes and a naughtily suggestive smile.
"Not now, Marion!" He started to pull away but froze when her other hand swept lower. "Marion!"
"Oh, Howie, don't be silly! There's nothing going on outside that door that need concern us, and if you risk wasting my mood . . . Why, I don't know when you'll manage to make me hot and bothered again . . . " She pouted seductively up at him.
Howard glanced from the door to his wife and then back again to the door that he knew would lead him to what he had been seeking to find for months. He sighed heavily, his righteousness arguing furiously with his loins, but it had been a very long time since last his wife had looked at him as she was now doing and so it was that he rolled back over, took her into his arms, and began sprinkling her face with his kisses.
Marion did her best to return his affection, longing all the while for another lover but determining to do whatever she had to to protect that young man and his true lover from being discovered. She smiled against Howard's hot and eager mouth. Fonzie was a wonderful man indeed, and the only thing that could have made her happier was if he had chosen her and not her son. As it was, she was happy for her young men and determined to see them happy. In their own passion, the rest of Fonzie's "Ayyyyyy"s went unheard throughout that breathless night in the Cunningham household.
