The People You Meet In Heaven

Dean woke up in his car. He looked around slowly, trying to remember how he'd gotten there. He looked out over the dash and saw the road in front of him.

"Crap," he groaned, remembering.

He'd been hunting in Dayton. A demon. He'd gotten clumsy. He was used to having Sam to back him up, and he'd died. He could only assume he'd come back to heaven again.

"Ash?" he yelled. "If you can hear me, I could really use a hand!" He put the car in drive and started down the road. After a few miles, he hit a dead end.

"What the hell?" he murmered.

"Hello, Dean." He spun around.

"Jesus, Cas. I thought you were done sneaking up on me."

"I've come to take you to Ash. He would've come himself, but I couldn't risk it." Dean narrowed his eyes.

"I thought you were the new boss up here," he said. Cas's eyes flickered for a moment.

"It is not going as smoothly as I had anticipated," he admitted. Before Dean could ask, Cas had placed his fingers to Dean's forehead and Dean found himself in the Roadhouse looking at Ash. Cas was nowhere in sight.

"Dean!" Ash greeted him. "I thought I'd see you again." He handed him a beer without even asking.

"So what was it this time?" Ash asked. Dean groaned.

"It was a demon. I got sloppy." Ash shrugged.

"It happens, dude." He stood up suddenly. "There's someone here who wants to see you." Dean sighed.

"Ash, if it's Pamela again, she's nice and all but.." Ash interrupted him.

"Believe me, you'll want to see her." He opened the door and Dean felt like he'd been sucker punched in the gut.

"Jo?" he whispered. Jo Harvelle stood before him, smiling, just as beautiful as she'd been in life.

"Hi, Dean," she said. "It's good to see you." She walked over to him and wrapped her arms around him. He hugged her back, burying his face in her hair. They stayed like that for a moment, until Ash cleared his throat.

"I'll let you two talk," he mumbled before leaving out the door Jo came through. Jo and Dean sat down at the bar, and even though it was cheesy, Dean held Jo's hand, because who knows when he'll die next?

"So..." he finally broke the silence. "Is Ellen here too?" Jo grinned.

"She's around. I see her sometimes, when our Heaven's correspond. If I want to see her, Ash can usually find her for me." Dean smiled. Then sighed.

"Jo, I'm sorry-"

"Stop," she interrupted him. "I'm not. It's better here. And I died fighting. That's how I wanted to go. And I died to save you. So don't be sorry." She paused. "You made my last few moments on earth happy." They were silent for a few minutes.

"I really liked you, Jo," Dean finally said. "You were more than just another bar chick. I wanted to be... with you."

"Then why didn't you just say so?"

"You were always too good for me," Dean explained. "Despite how you grew up ans that your dad was a hunter, you were good." Jo reached over and touched Dean's cheek.

"You're good , too," she murmered soothingly. "That's why you always end up in heaven." Dean leaned forward and kissed her gently, feeling ok for the first time in months.

When Ash came back an hour later, he found Jo alone.

"Where's Dean?" he asked. Jo smiled sadly.

"He went back, of course," she replied. Ash touched her shoulder.

"Sorry," he said. Jo shrugged.

"It's ok. He won't rest until he has no other option," she said. Then smiled. "That's why I love him."
