"Now you stay here, Harls," he croons. "I'll be back soon, I promise. And don't blow anything up without me."

They lock eyes, a mutual exchange of crazy.

What a pretty smile.

"'Kay!" She clutches her sledgehammer and tries to figure out, for the billionth time, how she can make her own smile look so pretty. "Ya-ya will come back, right?"

"Of course, pooh!"-he tosses her the lighter-"Keep that safe for me, will you?"

She nods and smiles, and watches him saunter to the car while the streetlights blink on and off.

Wait...

"Puddin'!" She bolts forward and runs to him, hand flailing. "What about Ivy's party?"

His hand freezes on the car door. "Yes, of course...riiight."

"Ya have to be back before then, ya have to!"

"Now Harley," he says, but she interrupts.

"Promise?"

He grumbles an irritated "yes" as he hops into the car.

"Aw, don't be mad Puddin', I'll make it up to ya!" she calls after him, her voice an eerie, lonesome spurt of sound that travels halfway down the street.

The parking lot sure does look beautiful. They stole a whole bunch of gasoline and spilled it across the asphalt, ready to blow everything up. But Puddin' said to wait 'till he comes back, and she knows he'll come back, so she waits.

So pretty, so easily disrupted. Just like his smile. He always makes her so happy.

She flicks the lighter open and closed, building orange walls around herself.
