"Sokka, what's wrong with you lately? You haven't been acting like yourself…" she heard Suki's voice say.
"Suki… Honestly? I'm not so sure about us anymore… It's not like it was." Sokka said sadly. This caught Toph's attention. Now she could see them; they were sitting on a log in the middle of the campsite. Sokka's expression was sad, from what Toph could tell, and Suki's was twisted in agony.
"What are you saying?" she asked. Neither she nor Sokka had noticed Toph's presence.
"Maybe we should… take a break. See other people." Sokka suggested. Toph noticed his hand still rested atop Suki's, but underneath Suki's hand pulled back a little.
"You mean break up?" she asked, her voice quivering. Toph waited patiently for her to grovel.
"I think that'd be best… until I've cleared my head. Alright?" Sokka's voice was quiet; he was trying to be gentle. Suki, on the other hand, was about to cry.
"Sokka, I… I love you," she said, a single tear sliding down her cheek.
"Suki," Sokka said as some type of warning. Amazingly, Suki shut up, except for her dismissal: "Alright, I suppose… I'm… going to find some firewood…"
Sokka sighed, and with that the world went fuzzy. It spun around and around, and suddenly…
Toph rolled over to her back and groaned. She kept dreaming the same thing: Sokka and Suki breaking up. It was a little different every time, but this time was by far the most realistic. She bended down her tent walls and, to her surprise, found Sokka in the same spot she'd left him in in her dream, looking just as glum and guilty.
"Hey, Snoozles, what's the matter?" she asked, curious.
"Oh, hey Toph," he greeted. "I, uh… I kinda broke up with Suki," he admitted.
Toph's head spun. Maybe it wasn't a dream after all. Perhaps she'd overheard and it monitored into her dream…?
"Oh… Gee, sorry to hear that Snoozles. Um… I think," Toph lied.
Sokka sighed.
"I just feel so bad," he confessed, "But I guess it'd be worse just to lead her on if I stopped feeling the same way, right? I can't help that…"
Toph punched Sokka's arm.
"Cheer up, it's not that bad. She could've been someone as awesome as me," Toph joked, pointing to herself. "And if you would've broken up with me, I probably would've kicked your butt," she beamed.
"Yeah, like I'd do that," Sokka laughed once.
"Break up with me or date me?" Toph asked for confirmation.
"Break up with you," Sokka answered.
Toph's head whirled once more.
"So you're saying you'd date me?" She laughed once to keep up her tough-girl façade.
Sokka shrugged.
"Really…" Toph pondered this for a moment. "So you've thought about it?"
"I, uh…" Sokka blushed. "It's possible. Don't hurt me," he flinched.
Toph let her hair cover her face, and scratched the back of her neck sheepishly as she admitted that she'd thought about it too.
"Really?" Sokka asked, surprised.
"Yeah…" Toph blushed.
Sokka tucked her hair behind her ear.
"So what do you say?" he asked.
"To being your girlfriend?" Toph blushed furiously.
"Sure, why not? You're the reason I got distracted from Suki…"
"I am?" Toph's head buzzed with questions she couldn't quite form into words.
"Yeah," Sokka answered quietly.
"Well, um, I mean… sure…" Toph continued to blush.
"Really?" Sokka squeaked happily. "Oh, well, um, great! But… maybe we should, um, keep it on the down low for a while… Until Suki gets over this fabulous hunk of man that's now yours," Sokka suggested.
Toph blushed and nodded in agreement. She didn't know how long it would be that they'd have to keep quiet… but she was sure she could wait it out. After all: she's already waited this long…
