Chapter One: Broken Enclosure
Hamilton's Habitat - the most advanced alien entomologist research facility in the known galaxy - was naturally in trouble.
A high pitched alarm resonated along the hallways, alerting the team of the imminent danger.
Jenny sat behind her keyboard as Dex, Zap, and Tung glanced at the flashing monitors. Several screens were highlighted in red.
"What is it Jenny?" Dex inquired.
Jenny enlarged the screen, quickly analysing the information.
"The primary holding grounds in Sector Five are down, one of the inhabitants has cracked the enclosure."
The team frowned in unison. Sector Five had maximum security and housed their most dangerous insects.
"Can you tell which one?" Dex asked.
Jenny paused and scrolled down the monitors.
"...No."
The situation had become an unknown. Dex took charge.
"Okay Zap, you and Tung head down there, find the bug and make sure it hasn't escaped. Jenny, go with them and activate a temporary force field around the enclosure. I'll grab some construction tools and meet you at the site. Alright everyone, head out!"
With the orders given, the team gathered their equipment and ran out the room. Tung jumped ahead, gleefully bouncing from wall to wall. Zap followed Jenny at a brisk pace, watching her access the red tool kit from inside her belt.
"Always ready for trouble, huh?" Zap joked.
"You know me," Jenny smiled, "It wouldn't be a normal day without a little trouble."
The danger of the situation was almost forgotten.
Tung used his nose to sniff out the destruction and was the first to find the cracked enclosure.
"Dudes!" he called, "That must have been some head butt."
The others immediately spotted the damage. A decent sized crack ran down the western side of the glass cage. Zap brushed a hand along the broken area. A small piece chipped off from the contact.
"Which insect does this enclosure belong to? Would that crack be large enough for them to escape," Zap turned and asked Jenny.
A preoccupied Jenny ignored him. She accessed the habitat database on her communicator and typed in the enclosure's number.
An expression of panic flitted across her face, before being replaced with a worried frown.
"Guys," she whispered, "We have to head back now."
"Why? What is it?" Zap asked as he searched her face for answers.
"This is the Colossus Cranium Cricket's habitat. The crack has damaged the integrity of the wall. Psychic shields are non-functional," Jenny explained, "Dex told you what it did to him. We have to get out of here now and regroup with psychic helmets."
The three entomologists sprinted down the corridor as the lights flickered above them.
"I'll alert Dex," Zap stated.
Using his communicator, Zap called Dex. He didn't answer.
Zap tried again. Nothing.
"That's strange. What do think hap..."
He stopped when he noticed his team mates weren't behind him any more.
Zap faltered, "J-Jenny? Tung!?"
They were gone.
