Salazar stared out under the night sky. He silent vigil from the Astronomy Tower was lonely, but hopefully, soon, he would have company. The grounds were quiet. It was past curfew so most of the students were safely in the common rooms.
He did see a couple of stragglers, teenagers looking for a private place to kiss, but this one time, he'd pretend he didn't see them.
Light footsteps sounded as someone ascended the stairs. "Sorry that I'm late."
"It's okay, Helga."
Helga, a woman with a luscious figure and bouncing curly brown hair, walked to stand next to him at the railing. She didn't comment on the two boys that leaned against a tree below them, kissing and heavily touching as if their lives depended on it.
Same-sex couples were ridiculed, but neither of them shared that particular prejudice of the Wizarding world. They both believed in love, no matter what form it took.
"You really love your Astronomy Tower, don't you?"
"Yes, it's peaceful. It doesn't change. It's steady."
"Salazar, I know our relationship isn't exactly steady…"
"No, it's not. It's full of twists and turns. High and low emotions. It's exhausting," he exclaimed, but his voice remained indifferent as if he was just stating a simple fact. And to him, it was a simple fact.
"Maybe it wouldn't be filled with so much turmoil if you didn't insist on keeping us a secret from Rowena and Godric."
"This is for you. Us keeping it a secret is for you. You know they'd never accept it. They'd think I'm corrupting your poor innocent mind. They'd think I'm using you and will accuse me of planning to toss you aside when I get bored.
Helga rested her head against his shoulder. "But we know the truth. We know we love each other. Wouldn't that be enough?"
Salazar's rigid spine went lax as he thought over her words. He finally tore his gaze away from Hogwarts' grounds and the couple below them that was devouring each other to look at her. His dark brown eyes clashed with her lighter hazel gaze. "Helga, I love you, but I don't know if I can deal with their condescending remarks about how I'm incapable of love. It's bad enough now. Can you imagine how bad it would be if we went public?"
Helga winced. "Yes, I can. Rowena would act like she knows what's best for me even if she doesn't, and Godric would be insufferable. They might be cruel to you, but their pity and them acting like I'm being taken advantage of as if I can't take care of myself..." She shuddered at the mere thought of how they'd treat her.
"And that's why it will remain a secret. At least for now."
Helga looked back down at the two boys again. "Maybe we should separate them in case someone else comes upon them."
"Let them have their fun. They aren't able to in the daylight."
"Just like us," Helga sighed.
"Just like us," Salazar agreed.
