Chapter 1: Left behind

She stood in front of me and cried. My Bella. And I, who had sworn to never harm her, was responsible. Didn't she realize I did it for her benefit? To make her life better? To let her live her life as a human, with a soul? But even more I asked myself why she didn't notice I was lying. Why did she believe me? Why did she believe me when I said she wasn't good for me? Hadn't I told her a thousand times that I loved her? Hadn't I told her a thousand times I couldn't imagine life without her?

There she stood in front of me, refusing to let me go. How I wished to tell her it was as hard for me as it was for her. But that would make it even harder. A smooth fracture, as Alice had put it, would be better for her.

I looked her in the eye for the last time. What I saw nearly destroyed my determination. With my last ounce of strength I looked away from her pained expression and ran. I didn't stop. I just kept running. I didn't know where I wanted to run. I just knew I couldn't return home for they would suffer with me. Esme had said they would depart that evening to Tanya's coven. Maybe I would follow them, but I also had something different in mind. If I couldn't be with Bella to take care of her, then I could at least protect her from a distance and destroy everything that would hurt her. That meant a vampire. Victoria. She was hunting Bella because I had killed her lover. She wanted to take Bella from me as I took James from her. Nobody would be able to stop her. Nobody but me…
