A/N just a short piece, no parings or plot, It's meant to be an article in the daily prophet. I was bored one day and the idea popped into my head so I've written it down.
Disc: I own nothing except my speculative theories on magic, J.K's story.
Magic, Is it really in your blood?
Professor of Magical Biology Penny Diggory explains her latest findings in her research in wizarding genes, and the make up of a magical biological system.
Discussion has long been held in the Muggle and Wizarding worlds alike as to the physical presence of genes which can define certain characteristics of children. For example, a child of two parents with two dominant blue eyed genes will most likely be born with blue eyes and so on. This is the fundamental basis for who we are and why we inherit the traits of our parents. This also applies to various forms of diseases (Cystic fibrosis, Huntington's disease) which are also caused by the combination of recessive genes.
So this poses the idea, that the ability to perform magic could in fact be the presence of a 'magic' gene. Imagine that in pure blood families each parent has one or two dominant genes that give the ability to use magic, when they reproduce, in most cases, the child will themselves have this gene and therefore be able to utilize the power of magic.
In half-blood's, the presence of the magic gene isn't necessarily as likely to occur, that is why Muggles born from magical influence (or 'squibs' as they are commonly known) are much more likely to be half-blood than pure-blood.
A Muggle born Witch or Wizard is a much more complex occurrence, dependent entirely on the presence of 1 dominant gene in one of the parents. This does not necessarily mean the child must be directly descendent far back from a Wizarding family, it could simply mean that somewhere along the twisting line of relatives someone is distantly descended from magic, or has entered into a relationship with a half-blood or even a Squib.
The single gene that has caused the presence of magic in the Muggle borns body may have stayed unnoticed in the bodies of each family member until eventually it appeared and formed the presence of magic many generations later.
In conclusion to my findings I propose to you an idea, that if Magic is such a common occurrence in Magical families, and If it has taken a long and strange journey to find itself present in a Muggle born child, Why is it not the Muggle borns who are praised for their individuality, but Pure bloods for their superiority?
Professor Penny Diggory will be holding a question and answer session on her latest book 'The wizarding gene' and her previous books: 'Werewolf parasites in DNA', 'Giants, A deformation in the blood' and '100 dead Wizard illnesses'.
A/N so yeah, I might reference it in a fic one day I might just forget about it, please give me your opinions on it though, I wanna know if it fits
