A/N: I saw Cloverfield in theaters and loved it, and then rented it and watched it again. But I keep wondering what happened to Lily. So I finally wrote this short little one-shot explaining her ending.

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

Lily stared out the helicopter window in horror, unable to peel her eyes away from all the destruction beneath her. What used to be New York City was now a war zone. Buildings were crushed, falling against each other, most much worse than Beth's apartment had been. There was little chance there were survivors in these areas.

"Holy…" a military officer squished in beside Lily breathed, his face also plastered to the window. "…where'd Liberty's head go?"

Lily glanced his way. Through the smoke, the headless figure of the Statue of Liberty was barely visible.

"That…monster knocked it off!" Lily shouted above the whirring propellers and the still-audible screeching of the creature somewhere behind them. "I was in the street where it landed!"

The last sentence of her explanation was lost in a sudden earsplitting roar, and Lily's heart leapt into her throat in horror. The monster wasn't behind them after all. It was below them.

"Oh, God! Oh, my God!" She squeezed her eyes shut and braced herself against the foggy glass, trying to still her uncontrollable shaking. Jason, I wish you were here…

The pilot was shouting inaudible phrases, and the others in the copter were urging him on, panic in even the most staunch of voices. Lily wished they would stop. It only frightened her more.

"Don't worry, miss!" one of the soldiers shouted in her ear, startling her into opening her eyes. It was the man next to her. "We're going to be just fine!"

A sudden violent crash threw most of the occupants of the machine onto the floor in a heap, tearing them loose of their seatbelts; Lily was saved only by her death grip on the bar above her head, but she screamed. The pilot lost his seat as well, and the copter began to spiral out of control, just as another crash threw Lily on top of one man, and another landed on her. A sickening crunch and a stab of pain made Lily's eyes water and her scream take on a new level of shrillness.

There was only yelling now; that, and the sound of the engine failing, the monster roaring, and the unmistakable feeling of free-falling without knowing which direction was up. Lily forgot her pain as she prepared for the impact. She only prayed it would kill her instantly, so she could be free of this terror and be with her friends again.

The last thing she ever thought was, Jason...I love you.

The impact came seconds later, a sickening crunch of metal somewhere in what used to be Lower Manhattan. Everyone in the copter was killed instantly.
