Star Gazing

I lean back, lifting my gaze to the stars that dot the sky above me. My fingers rest gently on the hilt of my sword, as they play gently with the tan ribbon that adorns the top of the scabbard. A smile that shows contentment on the outside twinges with sadness underneath. Sano is lolling on the grass, halfway between awake and asleep. Yahiko is lying stretched out, feeling the weight of a full dinner in his stomach as he sighs contentedly, falling asleep to the gentle sounds of Ayume-chan and Suzume-chan's deep breathing as they proceed to use Yahiko as a pillow. Kaoru talks gently with their grandfather, talking about the town and such. It is a peaceful night, and I watch with care over them, in all my attempts to keep them safe.

They have done more for me than I could imagine.

And I want nothing more than for them to be safe. They have given me so much, and I feel it is all I can do to keep my world from interfering with theirs. They have no idea what, or who, is still after me. They don't know what would happen to them for people to reach the goal of being the one to finally kill me. They have no idea what they're up against.

I guess I'm the only one who does.

I have more lives than I could count, lost at my hands, as I guide my sword in the graceful movements of Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. The deadly arcs, the graceful blows, almost like a dance.

I shake my head when Kaoru's voice calls my name.

"Hai, Kaoru-dono?" I ask.

"What are you thinking about, Kenshin? You seem so. concentrated." She tilts her head to the side when she asks me, causing her bangs to sweep across her forehead.

"Sessha does not wish to concern you with his thoughts, Kaoru-dono." I laugh softly. She scoots closer to where I am sitting, and, without saying anything, questions me with her eyes.

"You know," She begins, looking at her hands, then raises her gaze to meet mine. "You can tell me, I mean, if you want to. If you ever need to. I'm a good listener." She says.

"Sessha appreciates your offer, that he does." I shift my gaze to my fingers playing with my sword, where I am cradling it gently.

"Kenshin?"

"Hai?"

"I'm serious." She touches my hand, and lets her fingers play with mine for just a split second, before she withdraws her hand. She looks at Ayume- chan, as the little girl sits up from her slumber in the grass with Yahiko.

"Kaoru?" She asks, and Kaoru goes to her, and sits with her, holding Ayume in her lap. The air is filled with a calming stillness, listening to the crickets chirping and other night sounds. A new voice joins in, and my eyes fall upon Kaoru-dono, where she is holding Ayume-chan and singing a gentle lullaby to her, while she rocks her in her arms. I cannot hear the soft words being sung, yet the tune is comforting. I feel a certain protectiveness inside of me, as I watch the pair.

Protectiveness I have not felt in a long time.

I quickly switch my mind to other thoughts. I sometimes feel like a coward when I do that. So the word "Sessha" will remain at the beginning of my sentences.

Perhaps I deserve that.

Perhaps I'm just as scared as everyone else.

The crickets continue to chirp, as Kaoru begins to fall asleep with Ayume on the grass. I will let them sleep a little longer, I think.

And I will do my best to keep protecting them.

Well, minna-san! Another one of my fics that I decided to post. I wrote this for an assignment in one of my classes at school, and I got an "A", so I hope you give it an "A" too when you review this piece! (Please be a responsible reader and review.)

Keep an eye out for more of my pieces, and I can continue this if by means of popular demand, so let me know what you think!
