Detective Jane Rizzoli sat on her couch with her favorite beer in hand, watching a New Years Eve special. She took a sip of beer and started flipping through the channels. She stopped at one of the main networks that does the ball drop. It was five minutes to midnight. She looked over to her phone. I should've gone to that New Years party. But no. Now I'm sitting at home, alone, on New Years. Jane thought to herself. The homicide unit was holding a New Years party, like every year. Jane was just not in the mood to get out of her apartment. She was still in her pajamas, her hair untamed, and looked sleep deprived. She sat up and walked into her kitchen, and grabbed another beer. As she was walking back to her comfy couch, there was a knock on her door. Jane walked over to the door, looked through the eyehole, smiled a little, and unlocked the door. "I felt bad that you were spending tonight alone, so I thought I might join you." Said Doctor Maura Isles, chief medical examiner for the Boston Police Department, and Jane's best friend. "Hey." Jane moved out of the doorway so Maura could walk in. "But I thought you were at a party, or something." "Was. But I was getting bored." Maura said, as she walked to Jane's couch. "Maura Isles, getting bored? Shocker." Jane laughed under her breath. "Surprising, I know. But Jane, I just couldn't let you be alone on New Years." Maura sat down, and smiled at her friend. "Well that's sweet." Jane plopped down next to the doctor. "You're watching the ball drop?" Maura questioned the countdown on Jane's TV. "Yep. I've always watched it. Alone or not." Jane picked up her beer. Maura looked at the TV, then at her friend. "Why do you want to be alone this year?" "I don't know. A change, I guess." Jane took a sip of beer. "Changeā¦" Maura mumbled under her breath. The two friends turned their focus to the countdown to the New Year.
Fifteen seconds. "So what's your New Years resolution?" Jane asked Maura. "I never had one, I guess." "Oh."
Ten seconds. "Then make one. It's fun to see what you should work for in the new year." Jane said. "But don't tell me, or it won't come true." Maura nodded her head.
Five seconds. "So exciting." Jane smiled.
Four seconds.
Three seconds.
Two seconds.
One second.
The doctor's lips pressed against the detective's. The detective didn't pull away, she embraced it. She loved it. She never wanted it to end. When the doctor and detective ran out of breath, they pulled away slowing. "Happy New Year." Maura leaned her forehead against Jane's. "What was your resolution?" Jane whispered to Maura. "I can't tell you, but I can swear, it will come true." Maura smiled, and pressed her lips once again to Jane's.
