Prologue

A long, long time ago, when queens, kings, princes and princess where just on the rise…

Simon ran. His eyes were tearing up, and his bleeding scratches felt as if they were on fire.

The young farmer's' son could still hear the cries from the village he was leaving behind. But he couldn't think about that right now. His pursuer, an evil wizard by the name of Zorak, was gaining on him.

Zorak didn't seem out of breath, Simon thought, gritting his teeth. It must be dark magic.

Simon wished he had the power to blast the wizard out of time forever, but if he tried he knew he would be caught.

Simon sniffed and tried to go faster.

Risking a glance over his shoulder, he saw Zorak reaching out to grab him. Simon gasped and swerved to the right.

The woods were growing darker, and by now he couldn't hear the heartbreaking cries from the village.

How long have I been running? Simon thought. He knew one thing: too long.

His legs buckled, and Simon tumbled to the ground.

In an instant, Zorak was at him.

Simon couldn't get back his breath. Black hot-and-cold-at-the-same-time orbs bombed bombed him; Zorak seemed determined to torture him as much as possible before he… did whatever he was going to do to Simon. He could feel his world getting darker and fading from him.

With a surge of energy, Simon caught Zorak off guard by yanking his wand from his boot and firing a small beam of light at Zorak. It hit Zorak, but bounced off him and landed beside Simon with an ear-splitting screech.

Zorak grinned, and Simon shivered.

"You really think that will stop me?" Zorak said. He threw his head back and let out a "ha!" before turning back to Simon. "You have no chance against me." He leaned closer. "You're an ant next to me."

Simon's eyes widened and he let out a cry of pain as Zorak put his wand against Simon's foot.

First his legs felt as if they were burning, then as if someone had cut them into a thousand pieces, then finally they became cold as ice, and they stayed that way.

Simon watched with horror as the wave of pain went through his whole body up to his throat, almost choking him.

Zorak was turning him to stone.

Zorak leaned in even closer. "How does it feel, Simon?" Simon struggled to gulp in more air. The air seemed to stop at his neck, and he let out another strangled, weak cry.

Zorak grinned, and another wave of pain swept through Simon's body.

"Just as I thought, Simon. You will never escape your stone cell. You will always feel cold as ice, for eternity. You will not escape unless…"

Zorak leaned in so close Simon could feel his hot, stale breath on his face. "Unless someone kills me. Which will never, EVER happen!"

Zorak leaned back and put his wand on Simon's neck.

The pain was ten times worse than last time, and it washed all the way up Simon's neck and went on until not a hair on Simon's head wasn't stone. But this time, Simon couldn't scream. His lips were stone as well.
