Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Kira stared in wonderment at the child in her arms. There was a time when she thought she could never be a mother, that she never wanted another person to come into the world that would have to endure the hardship that she had. But sitting there, holding her brand new baby, she couldn't imagine not having him in her life.
"Well, despite all my longing and your planning for a girl, we end up with a boy," Rei said, stroking the soft downy hair on his son's head.
"I don't think Ayako* would be such a good name for him now," Kira said.
"Yeah, he'd probably get teased for it."
The two sat in silence, still in awe over the precious child that they now had. They had been married for five years, and many people were wondering if they would ever have a child. Kira had finally decided that she was ready, and Rei had been supportive of her every step of the way. Luckily for them, it just took a month after they made the decision to have a child that Kira discovered that she was pregnant. A relatively uneventful nine months passed after that, and here they were, finally a family of three.
"What about the name Sei?" Kira asked, hoping her suggestion would not be painful to Rei.
"Sei? Are you sure?" Rei asked.
"If you don't like it, we don't have to. I know that having a son named Sei would probably be somewhat painful to you. I just thought that by naming him after your brother, it would be a way that we could honor and remember him."
Rei picked up the baby from Kira and held him in his arms. His eyelids opened, and Rei looked his son directly in the eye. "Sei. What do you think about that?"
Rei watched his son blink slowly, yawn, and give a semblance of a smile. The newborn closed his eyes once again and fell asleep, nestled gently in his father's arms. Rei smiled back at the infant. "Sei."
*Ayako means "color child" and is very much a girl's name
Merry Christmas!
